Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Four stories of unusual animal friendships are related in three chapters each. In the first, an orangutan, Suryia, befriends a stray dog, Roscoe. Suryia and Roscoe become inseparable — sleeping together, playing together, and even swimming together, although orangutans usually avoid bodies of water. The second story features Koko, an intelligent gorilla with a desire for a cat as a friend. Koko speaks ASL sign language and is clear about expressing what she wants. She is gentle and loving with All Ball, her first kitten, until All Ball wanders onto the road and is killed by a car. Koko shares her next kitten with a male gorilla and then begins to turn her attention to baby gorillas. The next story is about Jasmine, an abandoned greyhound. Once Jasmine regains her health, she becomes the welcoming party for new animals brought to the refuge. She is friends with a fox and a baby deer. The last story is about Owen, a baby hippopotamus, and Mzee, a tortoise believed to be about 130 years old. Mzee shares life with Owen until Owen grows old enough to move into a section of the refuge specially designed for hippos. All of the stories contain factual information about the featured animals and are accompanied by high quality photographs of the animals themselves. Part of the "True Stories of Animals" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
