Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Though this is the "fiftieth anniversary collection," the stories in this collection aren't a sampling from all 50 years, just stories from the past five years. And a good thing, too, since otherwise many stories in this excellent collection would have been left out. Fantasy and Science Fiction has a reputation for publishing consistently superior stories, and a best-of collection is something to be savored. Most of the authors are well-known names. Standouts among the stories include "Last Summer at Mars Hill" by Elizabeth Hand, a wistful fantasy about a commune with a secret; "Maneki Neko," Bruce Sterling's story of Japanese "favor society" taken to its logical extreme; Bradley Denton's meditation on artistic inspiration, "We Love Lydia Love"; and the dark "Quinn's Way" by Dale Bailey, a story of small-town life during the Depression that barely needs its hint of magic for its effect. This excellent anthology is a must for all SF and fantasy collections.
