Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
The third installment of “The Family Tree” series follows Francie. It is 1977 and Francie is about to enter first grade. She is concerned because she has difficulty reading and feels awkward being behind her classmates. But she is excited at the thought of having actual homework, as do her older friends. In fourth grade, Francie narrowly escapes being abducted as she walks home from school. She chooses to keep this a secret from everyone, a secret that haunts her on major occasions. Each chapter is an entry from a day and year as Francie moves through elementary school, enters high school, graduates from college, and is married. Francie faces typical childhood issues as she struggles with the problems in her family, such as her mother’s estrangement from Francie’s grandmother. Contemporary issues such as racism, prejudice, divorce, cancer, and death are dealt with in an age appropriate way. While at times Francie seems wiser than her years, she is a typical young girl with whom young readers can identify. Francie’s story is the third in this family saga. Books one and two of this series follow Abby and Dana, Francie’s grandmother and mother. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson; Ages 8 to 12.
School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—In this third installment of the series which follows four generations of women in the same family, readers get to know Francie, a girl growing up in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Francie struggles with dyslexia and has difficulty in school. The slim volume follows her, chapter by chapter, as she overcomes her learning disability and graduates from college. A secondary purchase where circulation of the previous two titles is strong.
