About the Author

Sacchi Green is the editor of Girl Crazy and has co-edited the anthologies Lesbian Cowboys, Rode Hard, Put Away Wet; Hard Road, Easy Riding; and Lipstick on Her Collar. Her stories have appeared in an array of erotica publications, including the Best Lesbian Erotica series, the Best Women's Erotica series, The Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica, and Best Lesbian Romance 2010. She lives in Pioneer Valley, MA.

The third installment of Green’s annual short story series is distinctly uneven. Though Valerie Alexander’s “Ninjutsu” is a strong opener made of pure mile-high anonymous sex fantasy, R. G. Emanuelle’s “The Auction” attempts similar realism-be-damned wish fulfillment only to be tripped up by a jarring plot twist and questionable consent. Nat Burns’s “Jani-Lyn’s Dragon” relies too much on the titillation of imagining Janis Joplin’s sex life and not enough on appealing to readers through sex or story. Lea Daley’s “Rules” has a weak plot whose cringeworthy origin lies in false allegations of sexual abuse. The joke at the heart of Raven Sky’s “Fuck Me like a Canadian” can’t save it from tired stereotypes about Muslim women. In contrast, the real gems in this anthology are those that eschew the usual pert, young, able-bodied subjects of erotic fantasy in favor of more thoughtful, relatable portrayals, and are all the sexier for it. Of particular note are Scout Rhodes’s “Morning Fog,” which features sleepy early-morning sex between women over 60; T.C. Mill’s “Fearless,” which touchingly demonstrates the rewards of being patient with a recovering body; and Xan West’s “Trying Submission,” which flagrantly challenges all the old standards of the genre to celebrate a fat, disabled, autistic trans woman of color as she finds satisfaction in service. Standing alone, some of these stories are real gifts to readers, but as a whole, the collection falls short of its promise. (Dec.)

Readers are taken to the highest of heights and a bevy of locales in this newest collection of steamy f/f shorts. Characters and scenarios are delightfully varied. Valerie Alexander's dark, heady "Ninjutsu" serves as a phenomenal introduction, as an unnamed narrator with aerial fantasies searches hungrily for a mile-high club companion on her flight to Hawaii. Scout Rhodes's "Morning Fog" explores a very different narrative terrain with aplomb as two older women self-described as "gold star survivors" of storied pasts share a languid, sensual morning in San Francisco. An introverted barista meets her perfect match in Sommer Marsden's plucky entry, "Husher." Xan West's "Trying Submission" examines the first taste of submission for Liliana, who has autism, to gentle powerhouse Roz and offers a lovely depiction of power play that might be an introduction for some to service-oriented submission. Other highlights include M. Birds's "Where There's Smoke," a quietly appealing tale of small-town weed dealer June, who never followed her dreams of leaving home, but all is not lost when she meets a reserved English professor in need herself of a little escape. In Mags Hayward's lyrical "Yin and Yang," a young dancer and her lighting technician show their deep appreciation for each other's complementary skills with a thrilling post-rehearsal lovemaking session. VERDICT Recommended for stalwart erotic anthology fans as well as those seeking a wonderfully naughty inauguration to the genre.
