    A gem of a find

I discovered this book by accident and I used one of the most beautiful proverbs on love to proposed to my fiance and engraved the chinese characters on our wedding rings: the proverb was: 'Love as rare as twin lotus on a single stälk' which means one has found one's soulmate. Impressive!

    Not what I'd hoped for

This book is not what I'd hoped for. I bought the book to encourage my children to take an interest in their Chinese heritage. I think what makes proverbs great is the stories behind the one-liners. Without them, each line may seem dry and lifeless. Also, in the process of westernizing or modernizing the proverbs, the distinct Chinese flavor is lost. Not what I was hoping to show my children.
