Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The "Rookie Reader" series has been around for years and this is a new sub-series entitled "Rookie Read to Learn: I Can." A young boy with quite an imagination fancies himself as a chef. He is the master of mud pies. The steps he follows are similar to those in a real recipe and that is part of the purpose of the story—recognizing sequential actions. The pie is filled with pinecones, twigs, and, of course, mud. He claims it is a family secret and so we will just have to accept his word that this really is the best mud pie. The illustrations are amusing with some interesting perspectives such as the one with him wearing his big chef's hat staring down at the pots and pans; his shoes are bigger than the pans. After the story is finished there is a brief blurb about the author and illustrator, followed by pages of activities. They include a song that goes with a familiar tune, a counting games, a letter hunt, a sequencing challenge, and making a paper success pie. The final page contains a list of the fifty-six words that make up the story. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
