Overview

Cowboy troubadour Don Edwards is one of the last great American treasures, an artist who has remained completely indifferent to trends, expectations and the lure of payola. Edwards has been quietly maintaining the lost cowboy genre -- a niche that can count icons like Marty Robbins, Tex Ritter, Jimmy Wakely and Johnny Horton as alumni -- since the release of his Happy Cowboy album in 1980. A real-life cowboy in the Southwest, Edwards' songs are simple, poetic and bereft of Nashville excess. On the humbly titled Best of Don Edwards, the "The Minstrel of the Range" offers up some of his best work, including "The Cowboy Song," a gritty and realistic tale of what it takes to make a living on the trail, the politically charged "Freedom Song," and the gorgeous "Coyotes," most recently heard in the film Grizzly Man.

I have three other Don Edwards CD's, and other western CD's-but this is the one I keep coming back to. Edwards is at his best with "Colorado Trail", "Master's Call","The Cowboy Life", and "Prairie Lullaby". A good listen throughout.

My Father introduced me to Don Edwards years ago and I have been hooked ever since. Everytime I play his music for anyone they want to know who it is and where to get his music. He has a rich, beautiful voice and his live performances are every bit as wonderful as his studio performances. I believe he has one of the finest voices in America. He is preserving our history as well. Even my children love this album. They are aged 4 to 15. My in-laws, Grand Parents and my younger brother and sister love it too.
