Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula Rohrlick
This "Sports Illustrated KIDS" series title features a lively layout and plenty of full-color photos. The first chapter provides a brief history of the game along with discussions of the rink and its dimensions, hockey positions, equipment, and uniforms. Other chapters cover the teams, including Stanley Cup champions, dynasties, greatest seasons, and coaches; top players by position, including current and rising stars, MVPs, and a dream team; greatest moments, including career records; and fan favorites, such as arenas, nicknames, and mascots. There's even a trivia quiz. End materials include a timeline, a glossary, a brief bibliography, and an index. Fans may quibble that the book is not perfectly up-to-date; for instance, a cover photo shows Saku Koivu in a Canadians jersey, though he left that team in 2009, and the timeline ends in 2010. Also, the focus is on the NHL: there's only a paragraph each on women's hockey and college hockey. Most young hockey fans will want this nonetheless, for its appealing and colorful magazine-like look and the wealth of trivia it contains. Other titles in the series cover basketball, football, and baseball. Reviewer: Paula Rohrlick
