Best of Joe South: Retrospect

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Koch's Best of Joe South: Retrospect is a good, basic collection of Joe South's hits and key album tracks, spanning 16 tracks and including such staples as "Hush," "Down in the Boondocks," "Games People Play," "Rose Garden," "These are Not My People," "Untie Me," "Don't It Make You Want to Go Home," and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." The song selection may not be surprising -- the only relative rarities are two early cuts: South's reading of the Big Bopper hit "The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor" and "I'm Snowed" -- but it is excellent. However, since its release in 1999, this disc has gone out of print and two others have followed it: Raven's 2001 ...

The song selection may not be surprising -- the only relative rarities are two early cuts: South's reading of the Big Bopper hit "The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor" and "I'm Snowed" -- but it is excellent. However, since its release in 1999, this disc has gone out of print and two others have followed it: Raven's 2001 Anthology and EMI's 2002 Classic Masters. The Raven disc is superior, since it has a whopping 23 tracks and terrific song selection; it also overlaps 12 of the 16 songs here, leaving behind the two aforementioned early cuts, plus "I Knew You When" and "Fool Me." Those two are on Classic Masters -- in fact, all 12 songs on that disc are here, with "All My Hard Times" and "Mirror of My Mind" being left behind, along with "Purple People Eater" and "I'm Snowed." So, even if this is a very good comp that's worth getting -- which it is -- it's not worth seeking out because the other two discs do their job just as well, arguably better. However, those die-hard South collectors may opt to find this because of the two rare cuts that aren't on another Joe South CD.
