“Susan Mallery is one of my favorites.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber

Don't miss the final book in the bestselling Fool's Gold series!

To overcome her painful past, baker Shelby Gilmore goes on the hunt for a friend—a male friend—to convince her stubborn psyche that men can be trusted. But where in a town as small as Fool's Gold will the petite blonde find a guy willing to not date her?

Dark, charming Aidan Mitchell puts the “adventure” in Mitchell Adventure Tours…and into the beds of his many willing female tourists. Until he realizes he's inadvertently become that guy—the one-night Casanova—and worse, everyone in town knows it. Maybe Shelby's boy/girl experiment will help him see women as more than just conquests so he can change his ways and win back his self-respect.

As Aidan and Shelby explore the secret lives of men and women, the heat between them fires up the Fool's Gold rumor mill. If no one will believe they're just friends, maybe they should give the gossips something to really talk about!

Mallery returns to the tiny mountain town of Fool's Gold, Calif., in the 20th and final book in her contemporary Fool's Gold series (after Marry Me at Christmas). Shelby Gilmore followed her ski racer brother, Kipling, to town, and bought into the local bakery. After her abusive upbringing, men terrify her. Town playboy Aidan Mitchell will sleep with any woman who comes through town, but only if she's a tourist. When the two team up as friends without benefits to overcome their fears—Shelby's belief that intimacy means abuse, and Aidan's belief that commitment means pain and extreme self-sacrifice—neither expects the arrangement to turn into a true romance. Even as they try to insist that they're only friends, it's obvious to everyone else—both fictional characters and readers—that they'll end up together. Mallery spins such an appealing town in Fool's Gold that readers will want to move in, or at least return for many visits. Even though the ending is eminently predictable, this expertly characterized tale has heart and soul. (May)

Appalled to realize he's turned into a one-night stand jerk when it comes to women, charismatic Aidan Mitchell is determined to change his ways. When pastry chef Shelby Gilmore, who has relationship issues of her own, suggests that they agree to a six-month platonic friendship so they can hang out together and learn what makes the other gender tick, he says he'll give it a shot. The results are touching and hilarious and surprise them both—although not the rest of the town. A hero who needs to figure out how to appreciate and respect women and a battered heroine who must learn to trust men strike a bargain that ends brilliantly. VERDICT This insightful, laughter-laced story fairly crackles with sexual tension and has a lot to say about friendship, love, and relationships. Heartwarming and memorable. Mallery (Marry Me at Christmas) lives in Seattle. [An April LibraryReads pick.]

Was back in Fool's Gold again. What else does one need? A little bit slower paced but nevertheless quite enjoyable. Look forward to next one.

Best of my Love, the twentieth in the series, revolves around a couple of established characters. Shelby, we met in a previous book, she was horribly abused (beaten) by her father, settled in Fools Gold once she was rescued. Aidan is one of 5 sons of a very famous, self centered artist, who in his own way suffered at home. I loved this book, as most of the Fools Gold series, the whole little town is involved in each addition to the series. This was a very charming.

This visit to Fool's Gold finds us following Shelby, a partner in the Ambrosia Bakery and Gold medal skier, Kipling's little sister as she tries to learn to trust men and herself again after surviving the horrible abuse she was raised with. Then there is the hunky Aiden, the owner of the local adventure tour company, who has gone from one night stand to another so much so that he can't remember their names anymore. Aiden decides he needs to change and Shelby knows she needs to change so they hatch a plan to help each other do just that as "just friends," but can men and women really be just friends??? The humor in this book is fantastic as they take turns doing "girly" things with "manly" things. Definitely another great visit to Fool's Gold and I can't wait for the next visit!

My Rating: 4.5 Favorite Quotes: “'Do those have a lot of butter?' the eighty-something woman asked, pointing at a sugar cookie that had been dipped in chocolate. 'My doctor told me to watch my cholesterol. I told him I'm too old and he can watch it for me. Now I'm feeling defiant, so I want cookies with butter and later I'll have a steak." "You should wear tighter clothes... You've got the goods. Let's see them. Share the bounty. Take off your shirt once in a while. Put on tighter shorts... Young people today. You're not as bright as my generation." "I so want to be her when I grow up. Speaking my mind and ogling younger me. It's fantastic." "'We heard there was going to be lots of single guys here... We're into that. Maybe someone will want to have sex with us... Not at the same time. We aren't comfortable with the idea of a threesome.' An unexpected conversation, especially when the two women in the question were in their eighties." "The condom companies must've really loved you. Did you get a Christmas card every year?" "I've seen combat. I've seen a lot of bad stuff. Nothing prepared me to watch a doctor slice open my wife's stomach like a watermelon and pull babies out. They should warn you." "We like to think only men are stupid... But dumb is an equal-opportunity employer." My Review: I smirked and chortled through my first ever Susan Mallery tale, what took me so long? I want to read her entire listing. Best Of My Love was a sweet, humorous, and entertaining friends to lovers story that remained platonic, much to the disbelieve of the entire community, for of two-thirds of the book. The storyline was current, relevant, and intriguing, while Ms. Mallery's writing style was amusing, clever, touching, and well-paced. Her characters were endearing, quirky, and people I would like to know. I remained engaged with the story from start to finish and look forward to a return visit to this quaint community.

Fools Gold at its Best! Aiden Mitchell and Shelby Gilmore need to change their lives. He was a tourist hookup and she trusted no men, as they have all disappointed her. They decide to “not date” but rather be friends. This means “hands off friends.” A funny thing happens with their experiment as they get to know each other better. This is a funny, warm book which I could hardly put down as I laughed and sighed with Shelby and Aiden. If you like contemporary romance, you will love this book.

Best of My Love--Friends with Benefits in Fool’s Gold. As an avid fan of Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold series, I’ve been waiting for Shelby’s story. Ms Mallery does not disappoint. Both Shelby and Aiden have difficulty in the relationship department. Shelby has difficulty trusting men; she needs to find a guy-friend to help her develop trust so she can find her own happily ever after. After he forgets one of his previous hookups, Aidan realizes he’s not the person he wants to be. When Shelby asks Aidan to “be friends”, he figures it’s an opportunity to change his ways and become a better person. Best of My Love is kind of a twist on the Mel Gibson favorite, What Woman Want. Aidan and Shelby decide to build a friendship for six months whereby they spend time getting to know each other and doing male/female things together. Both agreed not to date or be involved with anyone else during the six months. By the end of their six-month agreement, Aidan has a unique understanding of and compassion for women. Although he wasn’t able to read their minds, Aidan, with Shelby’s help, developed a special empathy with the female psyche. Shelby, with Aiden’s help, developed a willingness to interact with and trust men as both a friend and as a lover. Her most significant challenge was developing the ability to trust her heart. Although Best of My Love isn’t my overall favorite among the Fool’s Gold stories, I really enjoyed this story. For the past several years, Susan Mallery has written over 20 stories based in a wonderful, albeit fictional, town in Fool’s Gold, California. As with other Fool’s Gold stories, Ms Mallery incorporates previous heroes and heroines and other favorite characters into the storyline. I’ve loved seeing how the town has grown, yet remained true to itself over the years. Friends and families remain the heart of the town. The ladies still meet at Jo’s Bar for lunch. The guys get together at the Man Cave. But, the winds of change are blowing. I love how Susan set the stage for the future. It begins with three of Aidan’s brothers moving to Happily Inc, California. I can’t wait to see where she takes it from there.

Easy fun read! Sad that this was the last one for Fool's Gold but am looking forward to the next series. I still love how the characters always intertwine throughout the stories and we can find out how others are doing from previous stories. Shelby and Aidan are strong characters and the story line is entertaining. Thanks for the fun series. If you haven't read this series, you should!

Last Hurrah in Fool's Gold! That being said, I'm feeling quite sentimental, although I might be biased as I'm a sucker for a happily ended romance. In this installment we return to Fool's Gold to hear from Aidan and Shelby along with all our other friends! Best of my love makes us ask the question, can men and women truly just be friends? She'll and Aidan learn more about themselves, each other, and love along the way to answer this question. You probably have already answered the question by just reading this, Which leads many to say say it's formulaic and your basic Susan Mallery I think it was a nice ending to a fan favorite series. It's a nice, easy, and worthwhile read. Plus you are also introduced to our next favorite place, Happily Inc.

***I was given a copy of this book for a true and honest review*** I'm a huge fan of the Fool's Gold series. Susan Mallery's characters are always well rounded and her locations vivid and picturesque. I felt a little lost for the first three chapters of this book, like I had been dropped into the middle of a situation I knew nothing about. It also seemed like I was missing an important piece of the story. Having said that I did enjoy the book just not as much as numerous other books in the series. Aidan Mitchell is one of the five "famous" Mitchell boys of Fool's Gold. He finds that his life has become something that isn't very pretty nor something to be proud of. This realization was brought to light at a disastrous New Year's Eve party. He needs to make some major changes in his perception and treatment of women immediately. The question is how he is going to accomplish this tremendous feat. He has no clue but a proposal from another Fool's Gold citizen provides a possible path to improving himself and his reputation. Shelby Gilmore, Kip's little sister has had a hard life filled with physical and verbal abuse from her father which has lead to her trust issues with men. After much serious thought and planning she has come to a decision on how best to proceed and who she will ask to help her. The experiment will allow for both herself and Aidan to change their perceptions of the opposite sex and to free themselves of their past baggage. This experiment will be for the two of them to become male/female "friends" without the complications of sex. You need to read the book to find out how this experiment works for the both of them. Can it be done? Will self doubts and gossip help or hurt the couple as they move forward with their lives. Are they actually destined for their own HEA life?

Best of My Love is one of my favorite books of the Fool's Gold series. Aiden and Shelby have decided to be friends- definitely not a couple. Yeah, we know how that's going to work out for them. But the journey is lots of fun with hilarity along the path. Haven't you always wondered how the other half thinks? Well, these two take the time to find out. Doing male/female focused activities and learning about each other. Becoming friends and of course something more. I loved so many things about this book. How it made me feel and how much I laughed while reading it. And the dog Charlie. I loved him!! So much fun. We get to visit with past characters too. And get a glimpse into the spin-off series Happily Inc. Ms. Mallery always makes me glad I picked up one of her books. I can't wait to read the next series!! Thank you for a terrific book and the laughs. I really needed this!

Best of my Love, is Susan Mallery's latest foray into the world of Fools Gold,CA. In the book we meet and get to know Shelby Gilmore and Aiden Mitchell. Both for reasons of their own are looking to change the perspective on their relationships so they decide to attempt an experiment and become friends just friends. What will they find at the end of this, friendship, or perhaps even more? For fans of Susan Mallery and Fools Gold, you will enjoy this very much. What's so great is that even if you've never visited Fools Gold you'll soon feel right at home. This is a great summer read for by the pool or at the beach.

As many Fool's Gold romances as there have been (fifteen? twenty? more?), Susan Mallery still manages to put together such disparate characters in such oddball situations that it makes one wonder exactly what is going on in her brain at any given moment. Best of My Love is yet another that sucks you in from the very beginning and keeps you reading (often overnight, when you should be sleeping!) until the very end. Will everything turn out all right? Of course! Does that stop you from reading? Heck NO! Loved it. When's the next one coming out?

I truly enjoyed this book. Aidan and Shelby agree to be "just" friends and spend time learning about the opposite sex from each other. They enjoy activities with each other, and as their friendship grows they learn to respect each other, and who better to have a relationship with than your best friend!
Tigressdana 12 months ago
I am at a point in my life where I want to do the same experiment that Shelby and Aidan are working on. Shelby has been physically hurt by men previously and wants to learn to trust men and Aidan is your serial player never wanting to settle down. Shelby approaches Aidan to do an experiment with her to help her get over her fear of men and to help him see that women are not just something to conquer and leave. They decide to be just friends and spend time learning about the other sex and how they work. Aidan takes Shelby to do "guy things" and Shelby talks Aidan into doing "girl things." They learn to respect each other and see that not everyone is out to hurt the other. And since it is a romance they end up falling in love. I love this idea and think it might be a great experiment for everyone to do!

Best Of My Love - Best of Fools Gold. Awesome read I think this book is the epitome of the what the Fools Gold series is about. Love, Destination of Romance. It's also a Fool's Gold gone Topsy Turvy. You'll laugh, cry, sigh and then close the book with a warm fuzzy kind of feeling. I think Susan really saved the best for last if this is the last Fool's Gold book we see for awhile then she has definitely ended it on a high note. Shelby Gilmore is a child/adult abuse victim and she has worked hard to get to where she is today. She is part owner of Ambrosia Bakery in Fool's Gold and in charge of her life again except for a wee small problem that really isn't small. She is afraid of love and men. So she has decided to do something about it because she wants it all and she thinks she's found the perfect guy to help her out so she can move on grab that brass ring. Aidan is definitely a love em and leave em sort of guy so hooking up with tourists in town for a blink of an eye is right up his alley.....until one decides he's the one and she comes back to tell him but he can't even remember her name. Disgusted with himself for how he has been treating women Aidan decides he needs to clean up his act and abstain from women when he is propositioned by Shelby. A win-win agreement unfolds...by hanging out with each other alternating guy and girl activities they will each work on their individual issues and be able to overcome and move forward to their own separate happy endings with each others help. This is where it turns topsy turvy but I love it and if only people would do this in real life I think more people would stay married forever. Manicures, poker night, baby showers, extreme biking will never be the same again. I love how the women adopt Aidan in town and men so the same with Shelby when it all falls apart; or does it because this is Fool's Gold now isn't it. I can't tell you any more because you must read it! This is definitely a Must Read Book and I know it will find a spot on your keeper shelf like it did mine with the rest of the Fool's Gold series. It is also a lead in to Susan's next series town Happily Inc. and I can't wait to visit.

The latest and I think the last Fool's Gold book. This was my favorite Fool's Gold book of the last few, partially because the author didn't try to squeeze in appearances by every couple who've ever met and married in the past books of the series. More than that, though, it was a good story. Shelby, a woman who doesn't trust men because of an abusive father, and Aidan, a man who doesn't really know and understand women, decide to enter into a friendship experiment ("We're not dating!") to learn more about the opposite sex. Of course we know they'll fall in love! It's a romance novel! I am looking forward to Susan's next series, Happily Inc., based on another small town and its inhabitants, three of whom are Aiden's brothers. Can't wait!

t's summer again! Time to catch up with everyone in Fool's Gold. This is the perfect beach read, Susan Mallery writes wonderful details about the whole town. It's so easy to get sucked in to the story and feel like it's a place you could actually visit. I'm always a bit disappointed when I get to the end, but then I remember I have two more stories to enjoy this summer. Can't wait!

I was so looking forward to another visit to Fool’s Gold, and I was not disappointed! I loved the premise behind Aidan and Shelby’s story… can a man and a woman just be friends. I know from experience they can, but I really wanted Aidan and Shelby to move past the ‘friends’ stage. Since this is Fool’s Gold, I knew I would not be disappointed there either. I enjoyed this book from the beginning. I read that others thought it started slow- I did not think so. It grabbed me from the hangover. Also, since I have read every Fool’s Gold novel written, I always enjoy catching up with previous characters, so I was glad there were so many included in this story. Feels like home :)

If you've never read a Fools Gold book, I highly suggest it. This is one of my favorite series, the book was a great easy to read summer book. The book follows Shelby, an abuse survivor and Aidan who was committed to "dating" as many tourist as possible. It follows the pack they make to be friends for 6 months and what happens after the 6 months is over. I like the concept of the book, friends before lovers, take the time to get to know someone before you commit. If your looking for a good summer read this is it. **This is a stand alone book with a HEA ending.

I love reading Susan Mallery's books and it is always a great day when I receive her newest book. For "Best of My Love", I thought that the story line was cute and very realistic and as a reader, I was able to relate to the characters (Shelby and Aiden) which drew me into the story line more. I liked the book and I encourage others to read it but it is not my favorite in the series.

Best of my Love This is the story of Aidan and Shelby, two people who just want to be friends, nothing attached and no “benefits”. Shelby has trouble trusting men since her father was physically abusive. Aidan wants to be a better man with no more one night stands. They decide to do an experiment that men and women can be friends with no ulterior motives. Susan creates interesting girl and boy experiences that the couple goes through as they learn to trust each other and become best friends. Of course, nothing goes as planned and it is wonderful to watch this couple realize what is happening. It is another Fool’s Gold winner and I love how Susan weaves former characters into the story. It is like visiting old friends. I truly enjoyed this story and especially enjoyed Aidan’s growth to a thoughtful, loving man.
