Flamenco has become more visible lately, rising in international status -- which might, in part, be thanks to the worldwide success of the Gipsy Kings, although it's more flamenco that's been the subject of the spotlight. This collection goes for the smoother, less abrasive side of flamenco guitar, pulling tracks by artists on the Narada roster. It's impossible to criticize the technical aspects of players like Jesse Cook, Oscar Lopez, and Willie & Lobo. But at the same time, it's impossible to get too excited about them -- they're the flamenco equivalent of smooth jazz as opposed to hardcore bebop. This collection goes for the smoother, less abrasive side of flamenco guitar, pulling tracks by artists on the Narada roster. It's impossible to criticize the technical aspects of players like Jesse Cook, Oscar Lopez, and Willie & Lobo. But at the same time, it's impossible to get too excited about them -- they're the flamenco equivalent of smooth jazz as opposed to hardcore bebop. Even artists like José Luis Encinas and Miguel de la Bastide won't set purists' hearts racing -- unless it's in frustration. It's pleasant enough for background music, but on an artistic level, that's all this can ever be.
