Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tiffany Torbeck
Only the best moments of baseball make this title. From best pitcher to best slugger with unbelievable comeback stories in between, readers will be reaching for a hot dog while scanning the pages. Legends like Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax share the pages with the 2004 Boston Red Sox. Babe Ruth is named the undisputed best slugger, notably beating out a more current player like Alex Rodriguez. Entries are short but exciting, like the quick three sentence blurb about the 2001 Cleveland Indians coming back from a 12-0 deficit to win 15-14 in eleven innings. Readers will pour over the pictures, both in color and black-and-white. Unfamiliar words are highlighted in blue with definitions at both the bottom of the page and in the glossary. Further reading options are mentioned, as well as a FactHound website. Young baseball fans may know some of the stories in this book but they definitely learn a thing or two as well. Gr 2-3–This series highlights the most outstanding plays in each of these sports. From the best homerun to the best touchdown pass, readers will learn about the achievements of superstars past and present. Only Soccer includes women. Spreads feature short, large font sentences in boxes opposite a colorful full-page photo. Some words are highlighted in red and defined at the bottom of the pages as well as in the glossaries, which include pronunciation guidance. Use this series as a good discussion starter–each book includes just enough information to generate arguments among fans about which play was really the best.
