The Orioles, led by singer Sonny Til, were sort of a bridge between the sophisticated pop sound of the Ink Spots from the '40s and the harder R&B approach for black vocal groups that would take hold commercially in the late '50s. For their part, although known chiefly for orchestrated ballads like the 1953 mega-hit "Crying in the Chapel," the Orioles were certainly capable of rougher jump blues material, and this set shows a mix of both approaches, covering the group's successful run at Jerry Blaine's Jubilee Records through the first three discs and concluding with a second incarnation of the Orioles, still led by Sonny Til, who recorded for C.P. Records in the early '60s. All the essential songs and hits are included, but this set pales next to Bear Family's six-disc The Jubilee Recordings, released in 1993, which is still the one to get if you must have a multi-disc Orioles set.
