Bestseller Vincenzi's diverting if charmless latest delves into the lives of a massive cast brought together by a multicar accident on a London highway. The brisk, journalistic style makes it hard to fall for any of the characters, whose lives are filled with high and low drama: a truck driver racked with guilt over the accident; his terrified passenger, who flees the scene; a successful doctor trying to break up with his mistress; a groom and best man already late for the wedding due to scandalous circumstances; and a widow headed to reunite with a past love. After the crisis, their lives intertwine tangentially as, among others, the best man starts a relationship with an ER doctor, the truck driver's wife becomes close with the widow, and the mistress falls for the farmer whose land overlooks the accident scene. The story brings them all back together at the inquest, the cause of the accident is revealed and apologies are made. Though everyone gets their predictably happy ending, the way the obvious resolutions drag out makes this something like a once-enjoyable guest who has long outstayed his welcome. (July)

Her latest novel engages readers in the lives of the drivers, passengers, and onlookers who become entangled after surviving a major collision on a London highway. We are briefly introduced to each character and then zoomed to the crash; the rest of the story details how each person is changed by the crash, the friendships made through surviving, and, of course, the love lives of each individual. The characters are from all different walks of life, from a doctor to a farmer and a young actress to a matriarch, and we see them try to make up for wicked mistakes they made in the past and "fix" their lives. Vincenzi even throws in a twist, using a mysterious hitchhiker as the only person who actually saw what really happened at the crash. VERDICT Vincenzi introduces so many characters that sometimes it is hard to keep track of who is who, but, overall, this is an exciting, intriguing, saucy novel. A perfect summer vacation read. 1. The role of chance in our lives is a major theme in this novel. Given the outcomes of the accident for the main characters, how do you interpret the difference between chance and fate in the book? Do you believe in fate?
2. There are many depictions of women in the novel, both young and old. Did you find the female characters true to life? Who did you relate to most?
3. The accident is the pivotal moment in the plot when the characters’ lives collide and are changed forever for better or worse. In that moment, which character did you find yourself sympathizing with most and why? Do you have any real anecdotes about traumatic life-altering moments that you’d like to share?
4. In the beginning, many of the characters such as Jonathan, Toby, and Abi are portrayed as morally ambiguous. Which characters did you find most difficult to categorize and why? Did anyone surprise you by how they changed in the aftermath of the crash?
5. In many ways, the accident is just as traumatic for those characters who were not on the M4. Did you sympathize with any of them more than with the crash victims?
6. Penny Vincenzi is known for creating large casts of characters and alternating quickly between them. Did you like the continuously shifting narration? Did you find that this style successfully contributed to the tension and suspense in the novel?
7. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and terrible mistakes play a large role in this novel. When Daisy gets hit by a car, did you agree with how Jonathan responds to his son Charlie’s guilty confession? Do you think it is fair to blame a person for something he/she could never have predicted? Do you think the treatment of the issue of blame is handled well in the novel?
8. Were you surprised that Georgia fled the scene of the accident? Did this storyline successfully add an element of mystery to the plot for you?
9. It’s often said that love is a fickle thing. In the case of Barney and Amanda, for instance, how much did chance have to do with their ultimate break-up? Do you think they would have stayed together, if Barney hadn’t met Emma at the hospital?
10. An allusion to the famous first line of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, the title of this novel could be interpreted as ironic. Do you think some of the characters’ lives were ultimately changed for the better? Was this realistic to you? Do you believe that something good always comes out of something bad?
11. The final part of the novel is entitled “Moving On”. Were you convinced that each character successfully moved on? Were you unsure how any of the relationships would fare in the future? If so, which one?
12. The Best of Times is Penny Vincenzi’s sixth novel published in the United States. Have you read any of Penny’s previous books? If so, how does this one compare?

Ms Vincenzi has become my "new favorite author," and the more of her books
you can make available to American readers, the happier I'll be. Have
just finished "Sheer Abandon," "An Absolute Scandal," and "The Dilemma."
And have read several others. Makes me think of Barbara Taylor Bradford at her best. Thank you for inviting me to comment.

The Best of Times was not the BEST book, but a quick and interesting read - I could not put it down as I needed to know what happened to the characters (who were extremely well developed - I felt as though I knew them personally!).
Definitely worth reading.

Vincenzi is capitalizing on her time tested formula of throwing together unrelated characters into a common situation. This time it falls short. She needs to take a break and come back with something original and of the same quality as her earlier work.

I love Penny's books...great family sagas. This time a cast of unknown characters, are all involved in an emergency event, and how it changes all their intertwined lives. I always rush out and buy her latest on the day it is available. I have passed it around to reading friends, and all love it!

After learning who everyone was and what character they belonged to it became more interesting. The language was sometimes a little too raw.

I Also Recommend:
I have read several of her other books, but this is without a doubt, the absolute best book I have read in a very, very long time. (I read a lot) The way the characters and their individual stories all connect together is absolute genius. I read this book in two days. I only wish there could be a sequel. I loved it that much.

Good story and characters. Dragged a little toward the end - maybe too much story?

While I enjoy everything Penny Vincenzi writes, the trilogy books are still by far the best. I keep hoping the next book she writes will be as good as those three were. This book has a very different plot and Vincenzi always does such a good job of making her characters come alive. As many pages as her books have, I always hate to see them end.

There was at least one character that I just wanted to smack, but I kept telling myself that I didn't need to like all of them. I think the book could have been written in half the pages. It was interesting to see the character's lives unfold, but it went on, and on, and on..... The longer I read, the lower the rating-it dropped at least one point because it could have been wrapped up much sooner.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.I read my first Vincenzi book a few years ago when I found An Absolute Scandal at a used book store. I absolutely loved that novel and I have read two more of her books since. However, I did not love The Best of Times like some of her other novels. It was enjoyable and entertaining but very forgettable. Some of her characters were likable but it lacked the depth and emotion that I have come to expect from her novels. All in all, it was just okay.

Bought this book immediately after seeing it on BN.com. Having never read this author before I expected more suspense in the telling and aftermath of the accident. It is a "light" read; a book suitable for vacation or a dreary day. The characters were just too predictable and the ending too pat for my taste. I'll pass the book along, but won't keep it to read again.

Overview
Everything can change in the blink of an eye. . .On an ordinary London afternoon, a truck swerves across five lanes of traffic and creates a tangle of chaos and confusion. A doctor is torn between helping the injured and hiding his young mistress; a bridegroom hopes to get to the church on time; a widow waiting to reunite with a lost love ponders whether she’ll ever see him again; and the mysterious hitchhiker, the only person who knows what really happened, is ...
