Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
These latest two "Best Places" guides are part of the series covering the Pacific Coast of the United States and Canada. The editors boast that they "trust the locals." Thus, the contributors live and work in the covered areas. Southern California encompasses Los Angeles, the Central Coast, Orange County, San Diego County, Low Desert, High Desert, the Inland Empire, San Joaquin Valley, and Southern Sierra Nevada. Lenkert, a prolific travel editor, has subdivided the chapters by city and supplied each city listing with information on access, major attractions, parks, beaches, museums, shops, and entertainment. Most of the text is devoted to restaurants and hotels, with extensive descriptions and evaluations (using a star-rating system). For example, the Los Angeles section has 23 pages of information on attractions and 58 pages on restaurants and lodgings. The guide to San Diego has a similar format, but Merllin, who is a former travel editor for San Diego magazine, focuses specifically on the city of San Diego and its allure. These guides are quite good, and any traveler to the area would do well to pick one up. Recommended for public libraries.--George M.
