Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kathleen M Woodruff, DNP (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description: This comprehensive reference tool assists nurses in identifying, developing, and using best practices in their nursing care.
Purpose: The goal of the authors is to take research utilization to a higher level by encouraging nurses to use critical thinking skills in individualizing research results to best meet the needs of patients. Evidence-based practice allows for healthcare to evolve and improve with the advances in research. The authors have created a reference that does an excellent job of meeting these valuable objectives.
Audience: This is a valuable resource for all levels of practicing professional nurses. Since the book is procedure-based, it spans all nursing specialties. It provides straightforward, accurate, and comprehensive information. It appears the authors have reviewed and used the most up-to-date research in developing this resource.
Features: The authors first identify what best practice is and how to work to achieve it. The book is basically organized by body systems and addresses the appropriate procedures within each chapter. Each chapter is clearly delineated with subsections that assist readers with quickly locating information. Many excellent tables, illustrations, teaching tools, and additional references enhance the book and the index is comprehensive and complete.
Assessment: This is an excellent nursing procedure reference book. It is clearly written, well organized and is extremely usable in everyday nursing practice. The release of the second edition only adds to its value since it verifies and updates all of the information. Evidence-based practice focuses healthcare providers on improving patient care by maintaining a current understanding of the most recent research.
