As good as a novel can be, both science fiction and fantasy live and breathe in the short forms. Limiting oneself to reading only novels will rob yourself of the fiction of writers like Michael Swanwick and Ted Chiang, who write short fiction almost exclusively. And this book would be well worth its' cover price for the first story in it, Chiang's THE MERCHANT AND THE ALCHEMIST'S GATE, a wonderful blend of both SF and fantasy, which has more imagination and creativity in its few pages than most SF writers manage to pack into their fat, multi-volume series. But there is a LOT more in this book that is well worth your attention. Charles Stross, Bruce Sterling, Stephen Baxter and (for my money, one of the best SF writers in the world), Nancy Kress are all in this book, turning in spectacular stories that you'd miss if you're obsessed with the longer formats. By all means, pick up this book, and the other volumes in this series. You will NOT be even slightly disappointed.

Impressive and, honestly, intimidating this tome of stellar science fiction and fantasy features masters of the genres at their best in twenty four dazzling tales of other worlds. If readers want some of the most impressive recently published tales of the SF/F genres without having to hunt them down through the multitude of anthologies and magazines printed this year this is an excellent buy.
