Overview

Author James Dziezynski has meticulously selected 80+ of the state’s absolute best peaks in more than 50 superlative hikes, and his opinionated narrative brings each route to life. Each summit is included because of a notable feature—whether it’s the site of a ghost mine or airplane wreckage, has thundering waterfalls or colorful floral meadows, is the best summit for spotting wildlife or bringing out-of-town friends, or is very accessible. Covering all Colorado’s major mountain ranges, including the well-known Sangre De Cristo, Gore, Sawatch, Indian Peaks, and Maroon Bell wilderness areas to the lesser-known Grenadiers, Medicine Bow, and Outer San Juan peaks, this distinctive guide makes it easy to select exactly the right hike for the right day, the right mood, and the right companions.

Editorial Reviews

To identify Colorado's prime peaks, outdoorsman James Dziezynski climbed dozens of the state's highest peaks. His Best Summit Hikes in Colorado delineates more than 50 unforgettable climbs with ascents to over 80 Centennial State mountains. Dziezynski has done his homework: The hikes include prime scenic routes, places to spot wildlife, and even the steel skeleton of an airplane wreck. Obviously a labor of love.

I picked up this book after seeing the author speak at the Denver REI. As an avid hiker and peak bagger, I was excited to see a new book that listed a good deal of summits I had never heard of 'plus a good selection of the best 14ers too'. After trying out some of the hikes in the book, not only is the information accurate and easy to understand, the book is -- dare I say entertaining? The author's love of hiking comes through in a authorative but relaxed voice--a nice change of pace from dry guidebooks. Highly recommended, though be advised these hikes aren't Sunday walks in the park!
