Overview

There are the small betrayals: the unkind word, the petty lies. And there are the betrayals that break hearts, destroy worlds, and turn the strong sweet light of day into bitter dust.

When Evie Johnson started at Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, her life changed in ways she couldn't possibly have envisioned: the discovery of her link with Lady Agnes, her special bond with Helen and Sarah, and their sisterhood in the astonishing secrets of the Mystic Way. Above all, Evie's love for Sebastian has turned her world upside down.

Now Evie returns to Wyldcliffe for another term and more danger. Surrounded by enemies, she lives every day in fear that Sebastian will fall into the darkness of servitude to the Unconquered Lords. The Wyldcliffe coven is plotting to destroy Evie and use Sebastian to secure their own immortality. Evie and her sisters must master the power of the Talisman before it is too late. But could it be Sebastian himself who will ultimately betray Evie?

In this companion to Gillian Shields's dazzling Immortal, magic and sweeping romance cross the bounds of time to deliver heart-stopping emotion and suspense.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rayna Patton
For readers who liked, or maybe loved, Immortal (Katherine Tegen Books, 2009/VOYA October 2009), its sequel will be a happy find. Sixteen-year-old Evie returns to her English boarding school, Wyldcliffe, wearing a pretty pendant, a gift from her recently-dead grandmother. The previous term, she had made two close friends, Sarah and Helen, and also met and fell deeply in love with beautiful and mysterious Sebastian. A hundred years earlier, Sebastian sought the secrets of immortality. Since then, trapped between death and life, he has struggled to fight off demons seeking his eternal servitude. Now, with his defenses badly weakened, only his love for Evie keeps him human. Meanwhile, a coven hidden at Wyldcliffe still longs for immortality. The pendant holds the key to life or death for all, but its secrets are stubbornly hidden. While Evie and her friends can call on the powers of water, earth, and sky, the power of fire is also needed to unlock the pendant. Friends and enemies are not who they seem, and help comes from unlikely quarters, but finally Evie is able to defeat the demons and release her beloved to longed-for death, while the coven sees its hope of immortality disappear. Well-plotted, romantic, suspenseful, and offering sympathetic characters, Betrayal will appeal to the younger Twilight crowd, though in fact it is much better written. The attractive cover art adds appeal for browsers, and while the sequel can stand alone, offering both books will be a popular move. Reviewer: Rayna Patton
School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—This sequel to Immortal (HarperTeen, 2009) finds Evie Johnson returning to Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies after her grandmother's funeral, but things have changed quite a bit at the exclusive boarding school since Evie's first semester. She and her two closest friends must battle evil teachers who hope to discover the secrets that will lead them to immortality. Using messages from the ancestor who first uncovered the magic to which she is heir, Evie struggles to defeat the coven and save her true love, Sebastian, whose doomed quest for everlasting life has left him stuck somewhere between life and death, from the sinister forces leading him to darkness. Told from both Evie's and Sebastian's perspectives, and introducing a band of Gypsies and a strange new student, this sequel is missing the romance of its predecessor. While those who did not read the first book may have difficulty understanding what is happening, fans of Immortal (HarperTeen, 2009) will enjoy discovering the fate of the nefarious headmistress and her minions and will cheer Evie and her friends on to victory. Give this modern-day magical romance series to readers who are drawn to Libba Bray's "Gemma Doyle" trilogy (Delacorte).—Sharon Grover, Hedberg Public Library, Janesville, WI

Meet the Author

Gillian Shields is the author of Immortal and Betrayal, the first books about the sisterhood of the Mystic Way, as well as many other books for young readers. She spent her childhood roaming over the Yorkshire moors and dreaming of the Brontë sisters. After studying in Cambridge, London, and Paris, she became a teacher. She has taught in a girls' boarding school and also in a drama school where it was rumored that the ghost of a young girl could be heard crying in the night. Gillian was inspired to write this series in celebration of the power of first love, the strength of female friendship, and the haunting mystery of the past.

    Really Excellent!

I had read Immortal last year, and I really enjoyed it. So I was really looking forward to the next installment. This was everything I hoped for, and more! It was a little surprising and I cried while reading during one point. But all in all, I really enjoyed this book. A definite MUST if you liked the first one, Immortal. Buy this book, You won't be let down!!!(:

    Unexpected!!!

I completly forgot this book was coming out and I was super pupmed when I saw this while I was on vacation in Florida! It kinda started out alittle slow for me i guess and i might have just been because I hadn't read the first book in while so trying to remember things. I couldn't put it down in the end I wanted to know what happens between Evie and Seb. I DID NOT WANT IT TO END!!!! I wont give the ending away, but it was suprising, but cute at the same time! It would be so hard for what Evie had to do!!! I am interested to seeing if Gillian writes a series off of this series!!!

Not As Good As the First....

Gillian Shields continues Evie Johnson's journey through her past to save her future at Wyldcliffe Abbey. But Evie Johnson is not just trying to save her own future, she is trying to save the future of her new found sisters, Helen and Sarah, and true love, Sebastian. In her journey to find a cure to keep Sebastian from forever becoming part of the darkness, Evie also learns more about her past and the past of the Talisman. She also learns who is her enemy and who she can trust.

Gillian Shields' sequel to Immortal was a bit disappointing in my opinion. I unfortunately did not find anything unique about this book. I found Evie's love for Sebastian overplayed, as I did in the first book. I also found Sebastian's character to have made a complete 180. On the other hand, there were quite a few things that I really enjoyed. Evie as a character for example. Evie is much stronger in this book, making her much more believable. I also really enjoyed the relationships she formed with Sarah and Helen (even though at times their friendship seemed one sided). I honestly believe that without her new strength and friendships she would not have been able to make the decisions she made.

Even though I might not have added this book to my favorites, I do hope that Gillian Shields continues this series, as I know that there is much more in store for Evie and her new found Sisters.

    I loved it

I liked how it ended. If he didn't die the way he did he would of died an unfaithful death. He had to die some time wether he is imortal or not. Let him die a peaceful death.

    Can't Wait

I can't wait for this book. The first book, Immortal, left me with unanswered questions in the end. Will Sebastian show up again? Will they be able to be together? How did the High Mistress and the other get away? Did they take Sebastian? I need answers to these questions and hopefully this next book answers some. I do recommend the book Immortal. It does start out a bit slow (she meets Sebastian around page 10 and doesn't see him again until page 100 for goodness sakes!) but it's well worth it.

    Omg so amazing

This was an amazing read. It took me a while to finish but I cried at the end. No spoiling here though! I would definetley reccomend to any reader of Immortal, really anyone who likes a good ol' gothic romance. Just make sure you've got a box of tissues present at chapter 45 till the end at earliest.

I read the first book a lllloooonnnngggg time ago, way before I

I read the first book a lllloooonnnngggg time ago, way before I was a blogger. I liked it and when Waldenbooks (AKA Borders) went out of business, I end up picking up this book. I hoped that since the first book fell a little flat for me, the sequel will pick up.

Plot: This plot remains the same as the first with a few differences. Evie is back at the border school, picking up what is left of her life. We all know that in a border school no secrets stay hidden. And before you know it, Evie is back into the same mess she was before, this time alone. I think the plot follows what most people will enjoy. It has that border school feel, with drama and lots of mystery. The beginning felt a bit slow since Evie was recapping what happened in the first book but once you hit mid-middle, things starts to pick up.

Love: I found this love to be really…strange. He is supposedly dead but not quite. Not sure if that makes any sense, but he gives her clues and helps Evie gain the tools she needs to fight evil at the school. The story also switches pov of both Evie and Sebastian. I found Sebastions pov kind of pointless. He pretty much said the same things over and over. I do however, like that his love for Evie help me stay strong.

End: The ending has a bittersweet moment in which Evie has to face loss all over again. There are few minor characters that peaked my interest and I’m anxious to see what roles they will play in the next book.

Overall, indeed this book did pick up some. This story does give the reader a bit more meat to chew. We learn more history on the school and why the evil resides there. Betrayal brings more emotions to the readers and more depth to the story. Betrayal is good.
