Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristina Cassidy
This follow-up to Bewitching Season is a charming tale of magic mixed with romance in the tradition of Jane Austen. After her adventures with her twin sister, Penelope Leland goes to Cork, Ireland, to study magic. Staying with her former governess, who is newly married and newly pregnant, Pen is lonely in a new city. She becomes discouraged when her host's male students do not want to study with her. Pen's opinion of Cork improves when she meets Lady Keating, who makes a point of befriending Pen. Through Lady Keating, Pen meets Niall, who immediately charms her; but, he may not be whom he seems to be. Lady Keating has asked Niall to romance Pen, although Niall is not sure why and quickly finds that he enjoys Pen's company regardless of his mother's motivations. This series has an interesting perspective on magic, but does not rely solely on magic to move the plot forward. The characters are engaging, especially Pen and Niall. Pen is a likeable narrator, although somewhat naive. Readers of supernatural romances will enjoy this book and its predecessor immensely. Reviewer: Kristina Cassidy
VOYA - Rachelle Bilz
Daughters of landed gentry, teenage twins Persephone (Persy) and Penelope (Pen) Leland live in Victorian Era London. In Bewitching Season (Henry Holt, 2008/ VOYA April 2008), the focus was on Persy; here Pen is the protagonist. When the girls' governess Melusine Allardyce (Ally) marries Michael Carrighar, Pen accompanies them to Ireland to further study and improve her magical abilities. The Leland twins inherited witchcraft from their mother's side of the family but keep their abilities secret. The more adept Persy, always a serious student, once used her powers to save both Pen and Princess Victoria from power-hungry evildoers. With Persy happily married, Pen wishes to hone her skills and perhaps also find a husband. Soon after arriving in Ireland, Pen meets Lady Keating who seems friendly. But Dr. Carrighar, who tutors Pen now that Ally is with child, distrusts this woman with a shady past. Pen falls in love with Lady Keating's son, Niall, but soon realizes that she may be a pawn in a nefarious plot against England's throne and that Niall's affections might be feigned. While sorting out her conflicting emotions about Niall, Pen contends with powerful magic, an ailing governess, and a clurichaun in the wine cellar. Seamlessly weaving elements of historical fiction, romance, and magic, Doyle creates believable characters in a realistic setting set in a fascinating plot. Extremely well written and utterly delightful, this book should appeal to female readers fourteen and older. Although this sequel can stand alone, reading the first book would enhance the experience. Gr 7–10—This sequel to Bewitching Season (Holt, 2008) finds Penelope Leland, an 18-year-old witch, visiting her now-married ex-governess/magic teacher in 1838 Ireland. A foreboding encounter puts Pen, literally, in the path of manipulative Irish sorceress Lady Keating. Duped by her attention and praise, Pen ignores her gut and guidance and unwittingly (once again) is embroiled in a plot endangering her friend, the young Queen Victoria. Encouraged to fall for Lady Keating's handsome son Niall (both pawn and ultimate benefactor in his mother's plot), Pen loses her heart despite reservations. For Niall, what started as mock affection becomes genuine love. He's faced with confessing his duplicity or seducing Pen (rendering her useless to his mother). Not the intense, layered world of Libba Bray's "Gemma Doyle" novels (Delacorte), this is a clean teen romance that's primarily concerned with Pen and Niall escaping Lady Keating's deadly ambitions and finding happiness together. Readers may lose patience with these pliable, repeatedly clueless romantic leads. Niall's "honorable" intention to "save" Pen by relieving her of her virginity is obviously ridiculous, yet believable of Niall. Secondary characters add color, particularly Niall's caustic sister Doireann and cheeky clurichaune Corkwobble. Convenient magic and its rules drive the conflict, but this title feels more like historical romance than fantasy. Give it to fans of ever-popular paranormal romance.—Danielle Serra, Cliffside Park Public Library, NJ
Kirkus Reviews
Doyle's sequel to Bewitching Season (2008) gives Penelope (Pen) Leland center stage. Now that her twin Persephone and governess Ally are preoccupied with their happy marriages, Pen travels to Ireland to further her study of magic. Feeling lonely without Persy, Pen welcomes the attention of Lady Keating and her handsome son, Niall. Pen's studies begin to suffer when Niall comes courting, unaware he is acting on orders from his mother, a powerful sorceress. Lady Keating needs Pen's virginity and magical powers to carry out her plan to kill Queen Victoria and thereby further Niall's position in society. Will Pen be able to work with the now-besotted Niall to thwart his mother's plan? Similar in tone and pacing to its predecessor (Pen must again save the young queen), there is enough back story to make this tale stand alone. Missing, however, is the humorous repartee between the twins and their younger brother Charles. The mixture of historical detail and magic makes this bodice-ripper another page-turner, if one that's a bit on the subdued side. (Historical fantasy. 12 & up)
From the Publisher

“As in the previous book, this is a full-bodied story that wonderfully combines elements of romance, fantasy, and history. . . . Whether Doyle is describing the Irish countryside, a magical incantation, or a lover's kiss, her writing is compelling, and it will be hard for readers not to be swept away by this invigorating story.” —Booklist

“The mixture of historical detail and magic makes this bodice-ripper another page-turner.” —Kirkus Reviews

Penelope feels inferior to her twin sister's magical abilities and now spends her days studying in Ireland under the care of their former governess. Ally, a newlywed, is having a hard pregnancy, forcing Pen to spend most of her days indoors, studying. Pen doesn't mind much until she meets Lady Keating. Lady Keating takes Miss Leland under her wing, introducing her to society's people, plus playing matchmaker between Penelope and her handsome son. However, she has an ulterior motive - and a plot in motion. Will Penelope fall under her spell, or will she use her studies to help untangle herself from Lady Keating's clutches? A romantically magical tale complete with double-crossings, a domineering mother, a seduction, and the power of women's magic, BETRAYING SEASON is a sweet sequel to BEWITCHING SEASON. I love this series, and I do hope the adventures continue.

"Nicholas will be seperated upon our arrival in Ireland." Mama states. "He will be going with his father in a large cottage right next door to you but since he is still suckling he will not be seperated from you until his first birthday." "In order to fight this dark magic it requires strong witches with a steady mind." "Children are a distraction so they will be living with a different family with their memories of us erased to keep them safe." She says firmly. "CHILDREN ARE NOT SLAVES! THEY ARE MEANT TO BRING JOY AND LAUGHTER! IF WE PUT THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE THEY WILL BE IN DANGER. TEACHING THEM MAGIC WILL KEEP THEM SAFE! IF WE DON'T, THEY WILL BE KILLED!" Persy yells. Mama's face softened when she saw the tears in Persys eyes. "Your children will stay with you until there is a suitable nanny found. When a nanny is found, the little ones will stay with her at Bandry Court while the eldest learn magic." She says. Persy sits down in relief. "You are both to go to your chambers and start packing. We leave at dawn." Mama tells us. Persy and i go to the nursery where our children are playing. "Mama! Nicky had an accident and won't stop crying. He also got sick all over his bear too." Serafina exclaims. I hurry to Nick's cradle. "Poor thing!" I murmer. "Aunt Persy! Maggie bit me." Serafina cries out. Maggie is her precious puppy that Niall gave her. I place Nick on his changing table and strip him down. When i pull off his linen cloth his tiny cock is standing upright. Nick squirms and moves his hands around until he grasps his little cock and squeezes. I take a warm cloth and place it on his cock then wipe him off. I pin a fresh linen diaper on and wrap him up in a blanket. "Pen, we better get packing." Persy said. I walk out of the nursery and into the bedroom that i share with Niall. Niall is already there and waiting for me. I sit down hard on the bed with my face in my hands. My shoulders shake with sobs. "What's wrong?" Niall asks me. "Even though Mama promised not to send the kids away forever she's going to. Nick will be taken away when he's two months old and the others will have their memories of this life erased and sent to other families. Persy's pregnant again and she didn't tell mama." I sob. "I'm pregnant again too." I say into my hands. I felt my face being lifted up by Niall. Pulling me into a passionate kiss. Niall's hands wandered to my breasts and his mouth to my neck. I moan in pleasure as i feel cool air on my breasts and back. Niall hesitates. "More." I whisper. I feel all my clothes come off. Niall gets on his knees and cups my vagina in his hands. Then he's eating me out. I stroke the blond head beneath me. He stands up and pulls off his clothes. Niall picks me up and buries his face in my breast. When he comes up for air, he sets me down on the bed. I feel happier and deeply in love.
