Overview

There are lots of children on Hill Street, but no little girls Betsy’s age. So when a new family moves into the house across the street, Betsy hopes they will have a little girl she can play with. Sure enough, the moment Betsy meets Tacy, one of the most heartfelt friendships in all of children’s literature begins.

The Betsy-Tacy Treasury brings together the first four books in Maud Hart Lovelace’s classic series: Betsy-Tacy; Betsy, Tacy and Tib; Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill; and Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown. Tracing the girls’ lives from early childhood to the brink of adolescence, Lovelace illuminates their innocent, mischievous fun and their eye-opening adventures exploring the world around them—from the stories Betsy spins from their neighborhood bench and the sand stores they run in their backyards, to their first experiences at the library, the thrill of the theater, and the sight of their first automobile.

    Best books ever

Read these 30 years ago and I loved them. Am sharing them with my 8 year old daughter and she loves them too. Good wholesome stories that follow Betsy and Tacy from childhood to marriage. As the girls get older, the writing becomes more sophisticated but is never, ever inappropriate. Love, love love these books.

    Must-have collection!

The Betsy-Tacy series is as necessary to children's book collections as Laura Ingalls Wilder! The first four books, collected here, bring the characters from age 5 to 12, and the reading level/plot advances with them. The first two books, especially lend themselves to reading aloud to youngsters. The next two are compulsively re-readable. It's great to have it on Nook for long car trips/vacations.

    Tops for kids

I hadn't read these in years and had forgotten how charming they are! They are a peek into the past in terms of the setting, but Betsy, Tacy and Tib are as real as today. Read the entire series! I read them aloud to my children and even the boy liked them.

    I Also Recommend:

    Charming collection

This is a pretty and charming collection of the first four Betsy-Tacy books. I'm so glad these books are available without having to hunt them down at used book stores, because these kind and gentle stories are exactly the sort I like to read to my small children.

If you love old-fashioned, gentle books about children having believable adventures, living their lives with joy and wonder, and learning about life and friendship, read these! I'd recommend them to anyone who likes "Anne of Green Gables," "Little Women," "Heidi," "Pollyanna," or "Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates."

Don't let this one slip away - grab it and enjoy!!

I read these books as a child and they are as wonderful as I remembered them to be. Over the years I have given many sets as gifts. This was a gift to myself. I had such a great time revisiting my journeys with Betsy, Tacy and Tib. The excitement and joy of childhood can be enjoyed by all ages and it is so nice to have a series where a child of the 2010's can visit the children of the 1910's. Don't let this series pass you, or your children by!

I love the Betsy books. I first read them when I was 6 and have read every one multiple times. They took me to a place that was different from my life and yet i could relate. I read them to my three daughters and now my granddaughters are reading them. I hope to some day visit the Betsy-Tacy museum.

These books should be considered American Classics. Maud Hart Lovelace had the same gift as Jane Austen, the gift of observing people and situations and creating interesting, deep characters. Yes, they are wholesome stories, but they are not boring or dull or preachy. Instead, they are lively and engaging and show how a young girl, Betsy, experienced growing up in Middle America in the early 1900's.

Highly recommend - a fun turn- of-century book about a small town in Minnesota

i grew up reading the Betsy-Tacy series. My mother is from Mankato (or Deep Valley as it is called in the books) and I knew first hand, many of the places as described in the books. I like the idea of having 4 books in one volume, making storage easier.

    Perfect!

This book series can really make you happy. All the fun, creativity and spunk from this bright, wonderful book made this a very satisfing story. It is based on a true story of the lives of Maud and her friends Bick and Midge, otherwise known as Betsy, Tacy and Tib. It really is a great book for everybody. My book club loved it!

    more from this reviewer

Bring back your favorite childhood classics again!

Since I began reading books in my early childhood, I kept the love of reading alive well into my later adult ones and some of the classics are beginning to resurface such as the Betsy-Tacy series, in this collection that I had the opportunity to review. The best part this has been being able to share this simple but timeless stories with my youngest daughter who is enjoying them as much as I am.

Since the books begin when the girls are 5 and continue until they are 12, the stories provide a rare opportunity to open up dialogue with my own daughter. The stories share what it's like for girls to grow from childhood to adolescence even though this books were written in a different time period, the situations are still real life for any girl to have to endure and lessons are learned along the way.

I received this book collection to review compliments of TLC Book Tours for my honest review and have to stamp this a perfect 5 out of 5 stars!
