CHAPTER 1

Annie held me up so I could look out the window to see the green grass growing. The birds were busy building their nests. I was so excited with all the new things I had learned.

"Betsy," Annie said, "the birds will lay eggs in their nests. When the little eggs hatch, we can watch the mother birds feed their babies."

"Annie," I said, "you gave me a warm bottle of milk when I was little, just like the mother bird feeds her babies."

"Yes, I did, so you could grow bigger," Annie said.

Then Annie said, "Betsy, today we are going to school. The little, two-room schoolhouse is where you will meet my friends."

I jumped up and down with joy. "I am going to school too!" I said. "I want to wear my yellow dress with white rickrack."

When we got to school, I sat in my buggy, and all the children gathered around to see me. "My name is Betsy," I said, and the children laughed with joy. They had never seen a little pig that could talk.

Little Johnny said, "My name is Johnny. I am so glad to meet you, Betsy."

I looked at Annie, smiled, and said, "I am so glad this is my first day at school. I am making new friends."

"Children," Mrs. Biggs said, "let's show Betsy how we can read." I listened as the children took turns reading from their books.

Then Mrs. Briggs said, "We have a holiday next week." Johnny raised his hand, and Mrs. Biggs said, "Johnny, would you like to tell the class what the holidays is?"

"Yes! Mrs. Briggs, next week is Easter, and we will have an Easter egg hunt."

I said, "I have never been on an Easter egg hunt."

Annie said, "Betsy, Mother will help us make the Easter eggs. She will boil the eggs. And she will fill little cups with Easter egg dye. Then we will put the eggs in the cups one at a time. The eggs will be yellow, blue, pink, purple, and green—the colors of a rainbow. The Easter bunnies will go out in the meadow and hide the eggs. And the child who finds the most eggs will win a prize."

I said, "I hope I find many eggs so I will win a prize. I hope the prize will be a new toy or maybe some money for ribbons."

"Mother has made special dresses and bonnets to wear to church," Annie said. "We will be going to the white church with the tall steeple. The boys and girls will all be dressed up in their finest clothes."

On Easter Sunday morning, everyone was busy getting dressed for church. I said, "I am going to wear my new blue dress and the Easter bonnet with white lace." I put on my Easter bonnet and said, "Oh, look, Annie! Look at me! I am so pretty. Where is my basket, Annie?"

Annie said, "Betsy, here is your basket. I am going to wear my little turquoise dress with the little white pinafore. And I will wear the turquoise bonnet with white lace."

I took Annie's hand as we headed to the car, where Annie's father was waiting. "My, girls how pretty you look!" he said.

Annie and I smiled. I said, "I do look pretty, don't I?"

Annie's father picked me up, kissed me, and said, "Yes, you do, Betsy, and so does Annie." He hugged Annie too.

We arrived at the church, and I held Annie's hand as we took our places in the little pew.

When church was over, everyone went to the meadow to watch the children hunt Easter eggs.
