Meet the Author

Daina Kalnins, MSc, RD, is a registered dietitian and a clinical specialist at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She has 15 years' professional experience in pediatric research and nutrition. She is the mother of two young children and is author, with Debbie Stone and Joyce Touw, of Better Breastfeeding.

Joanne Saab, RD, is a registered dietitian specializing in pediatric nutrition. She works at a pediatric teaching hospital and is the mother of twins.

Kalnins and Saab are also the authors of Better Food for Kids and Better Food for Pregnancy.

In this second edition of Better Baby Food, we have talked more about many aspects of breastfeeding, including solutions to common questions and concerns; we've updated the formula section to include some of the new formulas available on the market; and we've provided more information on some important components of a healthy, balanced diet, such as fiber and omega 3 fatty acids. We responded to comments we received from readers of the first edition of Better Baby Food and have reduced the amount of sugar and salt in many of the recipes. We have also added 50 exciting new recipes for families to try.

Some important changes include less restriction on foods in the first year of life. For the majority of infants, food restrictions are unnecessary after 6 months of age; however, current literature still recommends introducing one new food at a time.

Other changes have occurred in the lives of the authors. Daina's young children are now older -- her daughter turned 9 in 2008, and her little boy is now 7 years old. Both were breastfed and are great eaters today. They enjoy variety and always do the "lick test" when new foods are presented (see page 61 for more on the lick test).

Joanne has twin girls who are now 5 years old. Both were breastfed, and Joanne does admit to the challenge of breastfeeding multiples. People are constantly amazed by the variety of foods Joanne's children eat, and while they may not always like the new foods they try, they are willing to try almost anything, which is fantastic!

Our backgrounds in nutrition working at The Hospital for Sick Children have given us together over 20 years experience in pediatric nutrition and research. We are both Registered Dietitians, a designation that requires a university degree in science, as well as internship experience. In our professional lives, we have provided nutritional guidance for infants and children — both sick and healthy — as well as answered countless questions about food and nutrition from parents, co-workers, pediatricians and general practitioners. This book is the product of that observation and experience, combined with careful research, and the collaborative effort of colleagues.

In addition to our professional backgrounds, one of us (Daina), with a 2-year-old and 6-month-old at home, brings to this book herpersonal experience as a parent of young children.

We have tried to make this book as comprehensive as possible, and to answer questions about topics that include breast feeding, introduction of solids, and appropriate time to try table foods. We will guide you on concerns about stool patterns, and growth issues. The large variety of recipes will help you feed your child a balanced healthy diet that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Sample recipe from Dinner in the Recipes Section

Mashed Potato Casserole

This dish is a favorite with the young set, who all seem to love mashed potatoes. Anytime you have leftover mashed potatoes, use them in this recipe.

Preheat oven to 400° F (200° C)
4-cup (1 L) casserole, greased
3 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
1/4 cup (50 mL) 2% milk (see Tip*)
1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
1/4 tsp (1 mL) freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp (25 mL) butter or margarine
half small onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup (50 mL) dry bread cumbs
1 tbsp (15 mL) melted butter or margarine
  1. In a large saucepan, cook potatoes in boiling water for 20 minutes or until tender. Drain well; dry potatoes over low heat. Mash potatoes. Stir in milk, nutmeg, salt and pepper.
  2. In a small skillet, melt butter. Add onion and sauté for 5 minutes or until softened. Stir into potatoes.
  3. Spoon potatoes into prepared casserole. Combine bread crumbs with 1 tbsp (15 mL) of the melted butter. Sprinkle over potatoes. Bake in a preheated oven for 20 minutes or until heated through and crumbs are golden brown.

    Heathy, realistic & encouraging

    As my son is already 1 yr I got this book mostly for recipes for his age and they are great. Very healthy and realistic. They use ingredients you would already have. When so many books have an unrealistic super-mom slant to them, these authors do a great job of letting you know that while fresh home made meals are best and should be your first choice, don't beat yourself up about an occasional processed item - it's far more important to enjoy this wonderful time with your baby that passes too quickly. A very refreshing statement. Then they show you how easy good meals can be. My only criticism is that a few of the ingredients they use I would not choose to feed my baby - processed cheese, sugar added to carrots, etc. But that's my own preference and there are way many more recipes that do not include them. I'm very glad I bought this book.
