Santa finds himself in a stitch of trouble in the tenth in the series from the national bestselling author of The Stitching Hour...
Marcy is busy helping her customers make hand-crafted ornaments at her embroidery shop, the Seven-Year Stitch. But despite the yuletide bustle, when her friend Captain Moe asks for her help, she can’t refuse—especially when the favor is to play the elf to his Santa for sick children at a local hospital. Despite the ridiculous outfit, Marcy finds herself enjoying spreading cheer—until the hospital’s administrator is found murdered.
Although the deceased had plenty of people willing to fill her stocking with coal, evidence pins the crime on Moe. Now it’s up to Marcy, with the help of her police officer boyfriend Ted and her Irish Wolfhound Angus, to stitch together the clues to clear Moe’s name—before someone else winds up crossed off Santa’s list for good...

Better Off Thread is the tenth book in the An Embroidery Mystery series. I really enjoy this series. A wonderful cast of well-developed characters in a well plotted story. The stories easily flow from one page to the next. And Angus, Marcy’s Irish Wolfhound, is a great store mascot and provides a calming effect to just about everyone he comes in contact with. Moe, a long time friend of Marcy and her boyfriend Ted has asked Marcy to dress as an elf and help him celebrate the Christmas with the children at the local hospital. As Marcy was arriving for the first program, Marcy hears Moe in an argument with the hospital’s administrator, Sandra Vincent. Vincent wants Moe to give extra attention to the son of Dr. Carstairs , a member of the hospital’s board. He refuses and tells her to get another Santa. Then, as Marcy arrives to get ready for the next meeting with Santa, she learns that Moe had found Vincent, stabbed to death on the sleigh in Santa’s area. Marcy is confident that Moe is not responsible for stabbing and sets off to find out who might have. She soon learns that Vincent has not been the administrator for very long and begins to look into those that were also up for the position. One of those is Carrie, the head of the pediatric floor and the other is Melanie Carstairs, wife of Dr. Carstairs. Also in her sights is John Martin, a local contractor who has a history of violence, He also has been banned from doing any work at the hospital and has also been stalking Marcy. Marcy has help from her boyfriend Ted, who is not on the case as it in a different jurisdiction, Ted’s mother, Veronica, and most the others from previous books. This series has a wonderful cast of believable characters who work well with each other and always have Marcy’s back. So looking forward to the next book in the series.

BETTER OFF THREAD is a cute cozy mystery. This is the first book I've read in the series, but I only had minimal trouble keeping track of a couple minor recurring characters and didn't feel lost or bogged down by details from the previous books. Lee writes with a humor that makes for a fun read, and the storyline introduced a lot of suspects to keep me guessing until the end. It was a bit repetitive at times, but overall an enjoyable book. Disclosure: I won a free copy of this book in a contest.

Another fun cozy in the Embroidery Mystery series. I’ve read several of these and am always glad to revisit old friends, see who got snuffed and why, sift through the clues, and see if my guess on who did it is correct. It’s a busy time at Marcy’s embroidery shop, but she just can’t refuse when her friend, Captain Moe, asks her to play an elf to his Santa for sick kids at the hospital. It’s all fun and laughter until the hospital’s administrator is found dead and Rudolph’s shiny red nose points at Moe as the main suspect. I guess no good deed goes unpunished. It was good to visit with Marcy again and see how her relationship with Ted was going. And always glad to see more of Angus, her Irish Wolfhound. He’s such a character and plays a bigger role in this one. He’s got a nose for clues. Being from a small town myself, I’m drawn to cozies. They feel so much like my community. Most people know each other and that breeds familiarity. A murder that’s close to home has everyone looking at their neighbor, wondering just how well they really know each. A fun misadventure for the holidays, you can’t go wrong here.

There’s something about author Amanda Lee’s books that continues to make them inviting and warm despite the fact murder always lurks just around the corner. Lee has created well-developed, warm, and friendly characters. They are easy for readers to relate to. With each new adventure, the characters evolve a bit but new fans don’t have to worry they’ll miss something if they haven’t followed from the beginning. BETTER OFF THREAD moves at a good pace and the twists as the story unfolds will keep you guessing. There’s a good blend of suspense, romance, humor, and friendship for a well-balanced story. The small-town setting adds a layer of intrigue to the story. You don’t have to be enamored with embroidery or cross stitch to enjoy this story. It’s a delightful tale that will entertain you for hours and the characters will stay with you long after you finish the last page. FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.
