Overview

Some friends help us heal . . .

If you ask her, Natasha Davila will tell you there's nothing more important to her than her kids. She'll do anything for her son and daughter-even play nice with her ex-husband. Only now she's facing a problem she never expected: her ex is re-marrying and suing for full custody. She could fall to pieces . . . or she could call on her friends.

Some help us change . . .

There's Sara, whose tough talk hides a soft-and loyal-heart, and Haley, who has so much more to offer than a pretty face. When they're together, Natasha doesn't have to be someone's wife or someone's mother. She can just be.

And some remind us what true friendship is really about . . .

When Natasha's ex ups the ante and exposes some disturbing news about her friends, she's forced to cut ties. But can she really walk away from the women who have been standing by her side?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Zepeda (Houston, We Have a Problema) offers a subtle and often amusing look at a single mother struggling to raise her kids in Dallas, Tex.. Natasha Davila has custody of her two children, Alex and Lucia, and rarely has positive interactions with their father, Mike, her ex-husband who now lives with his new girlfriend, Missy, and Missy’s toddler. While Natasha and her children share a small apartment in a questionable complex, they’re happy and managing to get by with the help of kindhearted friends and neighbors. Then Mike sues for full custody of his kids. When Natasha contests the suit, Mike plays dirty, exploiting some unsavory details about Natasha’s new social circle. But playing dirty opens Mike to the same level of scrutiny, and no one, it turns out, is perfect. Zepeda’s command of family dynamics shows in every scene, creating complexity and drama that is somewhat mitigated by a message that readers of women’s fiction will have heard before. Still, despite far-fetched narrative turns, well-drawn characters, particularly Natasha (who shares narration duties with her son and a feisty friend) make this a rewarding read. Agent: Jenny Bent. "Jessica's evolution from self-uncertainty to self-empowerment is amusingly charted, and Zepeda's take on the popular fascination with good luck charms, horoscopes, psychics and unreliable predictions is laced with rueful zeal."—Publishers Weekly on HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEMA
