The story begins with the formidable looking Tora being released out of prison and courted by various crime organizations trying to curry his favor. The CEO of his own powerful yakuza syndication had just passed away & he was the favored successor. However to everyone’s surprise, Tora opted to be the chief of staff and asked that the CEO position be given to the yakuza’s doctor, Sakura. Why did he do that?
I really enjoyed this surprising story. The pace of the story is very lively. I am never bored as the current events flashed back to the boys’ eventful childhood. The majority of this e-book focused mainly on the very touching childhood friendship between Tora and Sakura. Both grew up in the same apartment building. I felt sorry for these tough little kids who suffered the violent physical and mental abuses of an alcoholic widower of a father and a negligent mother. It was normal for them to hide together in sympathetic shops nearby during the day to escape the constant poverty, hunger and pain. During one such escapade, they ran into the Yakuza who despite their initial resistance might be their best tickets out of their current situations.
Besides the main story of Tora x Sakura, there is an interesting interwoven story of Hidaka (current Yakuza young master) and his paramour Yashiro who decided to abet the boy’s effort to stay together. I really like the fact that the dialogues & actions of all the characters in this slice of life Yakuza BL story seem so believable. This volume 1 ends at the junior high school years as the boys met again in a typical violent circumstance. I am hoping there will be a volume 2 that will fill in the blanks as to what happens between Tora and Sakura from their teenage years up until their adulthood when they are poised to fulfill their childhood promise of betting their lives together in reaching the summit at whatever they do. It this case I imagine it will be to rule the Yakuza world.
I would recommend this story to anyone looking for a good Yakuza BL childhood story. It will be such a shame though if we can’t get a good conclusion from the author on this excellent manga.
