Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Many of us know that Betty White has numerous Emmys (seven, to be exact) and that she is the oldest person to have ever hosted Saturday Night Live, but who among us would guess that this lifelong animal lover served as the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Commissioner for eight years? In Betty and Her Friends, America's most beloved 89-year-old sexpot shares humorous, enduring stories about her buddies at the zoos. P.S. The color photographs of gorillas, giraffes, and baby animals perfectly fit the tone of White's tribute to our unconditionally loving fellow creatures.

Publishers Weekly
Actress White (If You Ask Me: (And Of Course You Won't)), a trustee of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Associate since 1974, walks down memory lane with various animal friends. Opening with the history of zoos, White explains the important transition of zoos from collecting animals to conservation. She regales the reader with brief glimpses of tigers, giraffes, whales, gorillas, and more exotic species, such as Komodo dragons-the largest living lizards that will attack prey larger than themselves. As a patron of zoos across America, White recalls fond memories of close encounters with animals: "I found that Gita wasn't the only elephant who liked to have her tongue slapped. I couldn't help wondering where they learned that." Some of the full color photographs throughout the book are remarkable-a pair of lions resting on their backs and a Nubian ibex scaling a nearly-perpendicular wall. White mentions a number of endangered species and revels in her close association with the zookeepers who work to protect and conserve them. Light reading, to say the least, this book will appeal to animal lovers.

    Great for Animal lovers

This is a 90 page book with some of the pages containing only pictures. This is Betty White telling why she enjoys zoo's and, why they are important when they are well run. She's had a deep love of animals all of her life and she will give you animals that have been saved from extinction because of zoo's. There is no denying that she has a deep love for these animals and all animals. As an animal lover from childhood myself, I learned a lot. It was a light, enjoyable read.
