Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Coach Tom Bass has written a book that explains football. The basic assumption is that the reader knows enough about the game to understand that it is a team sport and what the objective is, what a down is, and how the game is scored. The book begins with a description of the positions and explains the deference between offensive, defensive, and special teams. There are diagrams that explain the positions and the text tells readers what the abbreviations stand for. If you are interested in the sport, then you will want to read about the characteristics that best describe players in key positions. For example, "Offensive linemen must be strong, have good balance, and be quick when running short distances." This description is followed by photographs of players who the coach thinks best exemplify the characteristics. For offensive linemen, he has highlighted Jonathan Ogden of the Baltimore Ravens, Steve Hutchinson of the Minnesota Vikings, and Olin Kreutz of the Chicago Bears. Readers will learn about quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, defensive linemen, and specialists like the short snapper, holder, punter, etc. In addition to being an easy-to-read guide for kids, this book would be an excellent choice for anyone who would like to better understand this game that fascinates millions of Americans—especially on weekends and Monday nights.
