Biography, international politics: A youthful Rudolf Slatin left Austria in the 1870s for adventure in Africa. At 24, he became a commander under Britain's General Charles Gordon against the Mahdi in Sudan. Caoptured by the dervishes at the siege of Khartoum, he was imprisoned for 11 years. In 1895, he escaped and crossed hundreds of desert miles to the Britiah Army lines, bringing him fame. In 1898, after the Anglo-Egyptian expedition crushed the Mahdist regime, Slatin served in Sudan as Inspector General for 14 years. Welcomed in numerous courts, he was later knighted by Queen Victoria and Edward VII.
