Overview

Yes, there will be a war, but later. Much further along in time, preserved for the next story to come.

Of course there will be the need for heroic deeds, fearless warriors, and cruel sacrificial final stands.

Eventually.

But for now, in the beginning of this story, there is fear.

There is confusion.

There is uncertainty.

Not every warrior is ready to step into the role of protector just through means of destiny and physical prowess alone. Sometimes it takes much more.

Sometimes it takes fighting the battles within themselves first.

Sometimes it takes understanding the needs and love of the ones around them to understand the weight and value of their own sacrifices and strategies.

And sometimes it requires trusting yourself through all the uncertainty, regardless of the potential outcomes.

This is where foundations are made, and spirits broken, all to be re-forged amidst ice and flame.

Love, loss, tears, and jokes line Astra's journey as she tries to save her best friend, her lover, and along the way, herself.

But by the time the recluse writer turned warrior starts reclaiming all that matters most, and finally starts embracing life itself, will it be required that she trade her own away?

About the Author

As an avid reader growing up, I often looked to and leaned on story characters for inspiration, motivation, and comfort.

Thus, it became my hope that in creating these characters, that soon took on life of their own, that maybe someone, somewhere who needed to not feel alone, who needed to feel understood, or maybe who needed help understanding, would find comfort in their words and stories.

I have always held out the hope that the world could be changed through writing, and that in a way, a pen is a sword, and is best used to protect.

In that way, I had hoped to write a story that would break the conventions of the hero who trained, and then saved the day with the help of some friends and a golden thread of fate.

Instead, I wanted to write a story with characters that struggled in different ways; struggled in maybe more relatable, less talked about ways.

A story where readers with similar experiences in themselves or a loved one, would maybe feel seen and less alone.

Thus, Betwixt Monsters and Guardians was born.

It's my dream that even if my words don't change the world in a big way, that perhaps one day they'll change someone's world for the better, in some way.

For me, that would be everything and more.
