From its notorious early years of illegal gambling, glamorous night life and organized crime to its reborn reputation as some of the finest entertainment and dining in the country, the Beverly Hills Supper Club was frequented by the biggest stars, governors, politicians, athletes and illuminaries of its day and never failed to deliver a good time. But. On May 28, 1977 the final curtain fell.
Now, you can know what really happened. Follow long-time Beverly Hills dealer, waiter and finally captain, Wayne Dammert, in his personal inside account of this renowned showplace and the horrifying events of one of our nations’ worst disasters. Wayne Dammert and other survivors tell the inside story: true eyewitness accounts of the Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire.
I thought this club was in Beverly Hills California, but it is not. I had thought the book would be a story about what many survivor's went through and it is more a story of the personal experience of Wayne Dammert. However I found it to be an excellent book, absorbing and hard to put down. It describes the fire from start to finish. I was amazed to learn that John Davidson, a famous singer and personality of the time, was on site almost ready to go on stage. It is astounding to learn of the rapid spread of the fire, and how it sat for so long undetected. The activities in the ballroom continued until a waiter/busboy courageously grabbed the microphone and calmly suggested people leave, even pointing out the exits. Unfortunately most people did not leave - and how often do we ourselves sometimes think Well I finally got a table, I'm not getting up, or Well I paid good money for this ticket or I just got my drink or food, I'm not going to leave now. The people that left right away lived. The story about how the fire spread, and the struggle down black corridors where doors were locked, and the pile ups at the exits is sobering and it is difficult to put the book down. The book edition I bought is very high quality, well bound and using excellent quality paper. The photos are numerous and clear. An amazing story about a terrible event. Was this review helpful?
