Overview

"Have you ever seen me?/I'm the future/I represent how it's gonna be/I'm the future," heralds the opening track to Lil Bow Wow's precocious debut disc, Beware of Dog. And if the radio and dance floor-friendly single "Bounce with Me" (featuring vocals by Xscape) is any indication, the 13-year-old wunderkind is well on his way to fulfilling that prophecy. Despite his age, however, Lil Bow Wow is already a rap veteran. At age six, Snoop Doggy Dogg hired the young Ohio native as the opening act for Dr. Dre's Chronic Tour and christened him with his canine moniker. But it's über-producer Jermaine Dupri who gave Bow Wow his big break in hopes of re-creating the success he enjoyed with the adolescent rap duo Kris Kross. As the latest addition to Dupri's So So Def family, the rapid-rhyming Bow Wow holds his own on the bass-booming "Puppy Love," featuring Jagged Edge, the orchestral "Bow Wow (That's My Name)," and the percolating bounce cut "You Know Me" featuring J.D. and Da Brat. Listen up, MTV's Total Request Live viewers: There's a new pup in town, and his name is Lil Bow Wow.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jason Birchmeier
So So Def mastermind Jermaine Dupri and his production/songwriting counterpart Bryan-Michael Cox collaborated with 13-year-old Lil Bow Wow for Beware of Dog, an endearing album graced with several pop-rap gems. The lead single, "Bounce with Me," is the best of the bunch, a feel-good rap song that's refreshingly PG-rated. "Bow Wow (That's My Name)" is another clear highlight, an enjoyable song featuring Snoop Dogg. Also refreshingly PG-rated is "Ghetto Girls," a ballad with good intentions. It's questionable whether Lil Bow Wow wrote his own rhymes for Beware of Dog (one suspects not). All the same, there's no denying the charm and vocal dexterity of Lil Bow Wow, who proves himself genuinely talented, if not exactly a prodigy. He's pretty cute, too.

...an agreeable balance between Nickelodeon-channel pop and genuine hip-hop.
