Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The posthumous collection Beware, Take Care by Lillian Moore, illus. by Howard Fine, reprints 14 poems, along with one newer piece, "Fog," describing "A poke-through/ Wall/ Of/ Nothing at all." Fine's exaggerated beasts appear as clownish figures against Manhattan backdrops: a grinning King Kong with devil horns snags a pizza slice from a rooftop picnic, a hairy green creature sports a tutu in Central Park. Children's Literature - Barbara Youngblood
Just in time for the Halloween season, a colorful selection of the author's frightfully fun poems. Many of the poems appeared in previous editions but are brought to a whole new generation of children with the illustrations of Howard Fine of Piggie Pie fame. His monsters are the best. The poems are not lengthy and could be read by a class of early readers. They are very imaginative and will have children thinking about them when they've finished the book. The author has many children's books to her credit before her death in 2004. This is a fine tribute to her creativity.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-The ghosts, monsters, and dragons are amusing and not the least bit scary in this congenial picture-book gathering of short verses from Moore's Spooky Rhymes and Riddles (Scholastic, 1973) and See My Lovely Poison Ivy (S & S, 1975). "A Dragon whose size was quite whopping/Breathed fire all day without stopping./No child seemed to mind/For he really was kind/And kept all the popcorn a-popping." Double-page gouache scenes provide visual interpretations of the offerings and sometimes add a touch of innuendo. While Fine's use of charcoal gives the pictures a bit of a dark cast, the children and creatures depicted are all pretty much everyday, homely folks enjoying themselves. A few of the poems are suggestive, leaving more to the imagination. No one knows what hatched out of an egg that "grew and grew, big as a hat,/Big as a house, and bigger than that" (although the image of a large eye, surrounded by green scales, peering in through a window might provide a clue). Children can also wonder about the origins of the print of "A twelve-toed foot/Two yards wide" left in the snow. Illustrated with humor and warmth, these poems are simple enough for independent readers and silly enough to evoke chuckles and giggles during read-aloud sharing.-Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Fine adds impish life to classic Moore poems from an assortment of earlier collections. The late poet's tight, bouncy rhymes give a Seussical twist to the grab bag of verses (15 altogether), from a ghost in an apartment house to the scary "Who?" of an owl in a tree to giant mysterious footprints in the snow. Which is to say that the chills she provides are gleeful and not the kind that produce nightmares; "The Ghost in the Supermarket" ends with this couplet: " 'I'm just looking for the toast,' says the ghost." "The Monster's Birthday Party" features a "cake in the shape of a snake, and trimmed with octopus goo." Fine's illustrations, in charcoal and gouache, add another level of appealing quirkiness; his grinning monsters all look like they need orthodontia (funny, since Fine's a dentist) and a diet. A fun collection perfectly timed for Halloween. (Picture book. 3-8)
