Overview

When witch for hire, Megan Stephens, is assigned to help the local werewolf pack leader find a mate, she thinks the job will be easy. Get in, get it up and get gone. But when she meets Zack Connor, she realizes her future might have a lot more dog jokes in it than she ever imagined.

“I don’t get paid enough to deal with a werewolf that can’t get laid.”

My boss frowned at me. He was under the mistaken impression that I didn’t have enough tact. The truth was, I had no tact.

My co-worker claims that this frown—the one that makes a groove in my boss’s forehead the size of the grand canyon—is reserved for me.

Who says I’m not special?

“Zackary Connor is the pack master and is willing to make it worth your while for making the trip out there.”

I did an eyebrow raise to show mild interest. Hmmm, money? “How long will it take?”

“It shouldn’t take longer than a full moon. The problem isn’t so much that he can’t choose a mate but that he won’t.”

“It kills me to say this, but has this guy taken a look at my love life? The odds of me being able to help him score seem low to slightly above non-existent.”

“Since he doesn’t want your advice, it shouldn’t be a problem. And let’s be clear: he’s not paying for your attitude. Go in there, do a little love spell to get this thing going and leave.”

“By ‘this thing’ do you mean his penis? Because that’s a different spell and, boy, will it cost extra.” I gave him my innocent-eyed expression.

He took a deep breath and looked out the window, no doubt fantasizing about being far away from me. He was just too easy to irritate.

Fortunately, I’m the best Wiccan in a two state area. So my personality literally can’t get me fired.

“Okay. Here is the file. You are expected to show up tomorrow. How does that work for you?”

“The full moon is four days away! What the heck am I going to get done in four measly days? I thought you meant next month.”

“He wants you there now,” my boss said flatly and then he turned his shiny bald head back to his computer screen.

I gave him a sarcastic salute and left. Where the hell was I going?

Meet the Author

Caroline Hanson grew up in California and moved to London in order to dance and go to pubs. Eventually, she matured enough to marry and imported an Englishman, returning to the United States. After passing the bar, she had two children and now tries to parent, read, write and play tennis. She's heard rumors that other mothers clean and cook but is putting in serious effort to make sure those rumors don't reach her family. Caroline grew up listening to Brit pop and reading about vampires. As a teenager her favorite authors were Anne Rice and Jude Deveraux. Now she loves Laurell K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Laura Kinsale, Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, Nalini Singh and JR Ward-- that's the short list. She is also the proud owner of a WWJD t-shirt, (What Would Joss do?) which she hopes is apparent in her books. She loves to hear from fans and her second book in the Valerie Dearborn Series, Love is Fear, will be published in December 2011. A free short story called Bewitching the Werewolf was released in September.

Enjoyed this but read so quickly I was left looking for the rest! More like a condensed version, so much packed in with little or no background on the characters

Character set up is ok - she's a snarky witch, he's the alpha werewolf who has dated a lot, but still hasn't met his mate. Initial meet is ok, but minimal action before he realizes it must be her and they engage in hot sex in his car. Then the story ends. The story had potential, but ends so abruptly it disappoints. Would have liked more details on the interface between her magic and the wolves, more about relationship with the secondary characters and setting, and more natural development of the relationship between the primary characters. Only two stars.

The story idea isn't a new one and other than a energetic sex scene there wasn't anything to explain why the relationship was good or bad. No building of characters for the reader, etc... What this reminds me of is bits of scenes in an outline. But an outline, a story doesn't make. Just an aside to the writer... next time let us know who the characters are, too. The make the short story a little longer. You could have put the next 25 pages that are lead in's to other stories at the back of the book into this one and it could have been good. Sorry, not one of my favorites.

Enjoyable read but too short. It's really sad that you have such good books with lousy ending.
