Overview

They were called Easy Company-but their mission was never easy. Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered 150% casualties while liberating Europe-an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters was their commander-"the best combat leader in World War II" to his men. This is his story-told in his own words for the first time.

On D-Day, Dick Winters parachuted into France and assumed leadership of the Band of Brothers when their commander was killed. He led them through the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. They liberated an S.S. death camp from the horrors of the Holocaust and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler's alpine retreat. After briefly serving during the Korean War, Winters was a highly successful businessman. Made famous by Stephen Ambrose's book Band of Brothers--and the subsequent award-winning HBO miniseries--he is the object of worldwide adulation.

Beyond Band of Brothers is Winters's memoir-based on his wartime diary-but it also includes his comrades' untold stories. Virtually all this material is being released for the first time. Only Winters was present from the activation of Easy Company until the war's end. Winner of the Distinguished Service Cross, only he could pen this moving tribute to the human spirit.

    A great book

Dick Winters is a great American war hero and tells an expanded account of his duties, trials, and tribulations in his time during WWII. I thought this book was a great read and I really appreciate his follow up to the Stephen E. Ambrose book- Band of Brothers.

    Mildly recommended...

The book is not bad, per se, and Winters is certainly an admirable and interesting person. My main beef with this work is that it has the feel of something cobbled together to cash in on the popularity of Band of Brothers. Still if you read and enjoyed that work, Beyond Band of Brothers is worth a look.

Band of Brothers as told by Captain Winters

This is a really good book. If you watched the Band of Brothers DVD series, this book will literally flash your mind back to scenes from the movie. I was surprised at how much the movie was actually realistic. I only gave it 4 stars out of five because, in the last couple of chapters, Dick Winters starts to kind of toot his own horn and his cast alight on his leadership skills. While it is all true, and he deserves the accolades, nobody like to hear others brag on themselves. Other than that, very good book that I recommend.

    Very good!

This is a well written, easy to read book that adds focus to the "Band of Brothers" story. The chapter relating to Major Winter's personal thoughts on leadership only adds to a growing admiration for this great man.

Very good book on World War II soldiers

After watching the HBO series Band of Brothers I wanted to read more about airborne soldiers of World War II. This was a great book that told many of the same stories told in the tv series, with a lot more in depth stories about all of the characters. It is well written and has some decent photos to go along with it.

    Perfect!

I am a huge, huge fan of all of the Band of Brothers books, movies, mini series, you name it. I love how it depicts not only life on a personal level, but the love and respect that these men had for each other during the war and still to this day. I highly recommend it to everyone but particularly to those interested in the history of war.

    Inspiring!

Dick Winters is part of a generation we all should emulate. This book is a welcome addition to Band of Brothers and has inspired me to read more from and about the men who helped save the world in the 1940's. These men are heroes even though if you ask them they will say they just had a job to do and did it. Every person who has an opportunity to meet someone who fought in WWII should feel privileged and thank them for their sacrifices.

A Superior Book on Duty, Honor, and Bravery

Truly regretful that it has taken so long for the story of these brave men to be told. I will soon conclude reading this book twice. The last chapter on leadership is inspiring and might be the best section in the book. The world owes a great deal to men like Dick Winters, William Guarnere, Carwood Lipton, and countless others whose names we will never know. If you liked 'Band of Brothers' by Steven Ambrose, you will like this book more!

Thanks to the Greatest Generation !!!

I have long considered myself a student of history, and wiith my father having served with the 1st Infantry Division in WWII books dealing with the average GI have the most interest for me. Like many others my wife and I watched the fine HBO film 'Band of Brothers' by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, I then rushed out and purchased the book. This year my wife gave me Major Winters novel and I found it extremely well written. First of all I want to take this opportunity to thank Major Winters, and all the men of Easy Company for all they did to give us the freedoms we all share today! Major Winters has given us a outstanding piece of history as seen from the eyes of the average soldier, done in a manner that is such an easy read and yet is so compelling you can barely put it down. I STRONGLY SUGGEST that ANYONE who ENJOYS books based on WWII to READ this one!
