Overview

Under the blazing Iraqi sun in the summer of 2007, Shannon Meehan, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, ordered a strike that would take the lives of innocent Iraqi civilians. He thought he was doing the right thing. He thought he was protecting his men. He thought that he would only kill the enemy, but in the ruins of the strike, he discovers his mistake and uncovers a tragedy.

For most of his deployment in Iraq, Lt. Meehan felt that he had been made for a life in the military. A tank commander, he worked in the violent Diyala Province, successfully fighting the insurgency by various Sunni and Shia factions. He was celebrated by his senior officers and decorated with medals. But when the U.S. surge to retake Iraq in 2006 and 2007 finally pushed into Baqubah, a town virtually entirely controlled by al Qaida, Meehan would make the decision that would change his life.

This is the true story of one soldier's attempt to reconcile what he has done with what he felt he had to do. Stark and devastating, it recounts first-hand the reality of a new type of warfare that remains largely unspoken and forgotten on the frontlines of Iraq.

    Moving, real-life account; heroic

I receieved "Beyond Duty" as a Christmas gift from my son, who attends VMI and has met Shannon Meehan. Meehan's personal account of his experiences in Iraq and the personal challenges he wrestles with are told in a way that places the reader there -- alongside his platoon engaged in combat; alongside modern American heroes who are our brothers, sons, husbands and fathers... No matter you view on the war in Iraq, you will be moved by Meehan's balanced account.

    more from this reviewer

"Beyond Duty" brings the realities of war to the front page.

"Beyond Duty" is a well written narrative that examines the realities of our current wars. This first hand account forces the reader to see what is actually occurring on the battlefield and not just what journalists are reporting. It outlines one mans trails as he faces the hard facts and events that many service members are living on a daily basis. CPT. Meehan not only provides a voice for himself but also for the thousands of veterans that return home to face the emotions that they have gained. As our wars continue and more and more service members are forced to face and make the tough and at times impossible decisions they will experience what Meehan so thoughtfully and heartbreaking describes.

"Beyond Duty" speaks both to soldiers who are suffering and a broader civilian public who I think really does want to know the challenges of war.

"Beyond Duty" explores a more universal issue of war, dealing with civilian casualties. Soldiers' roles in the death of civilians during war is something that I feel is not portrayed well by many media outlets. The military comes across as apathetic, like a ruthless machine, unforgiving and unaffected by the tragic loss of civilians in war. This book attempts to speak honestly about civilian casualties in order to flesh out the painful truth of what many soldiers undergo in coping with the death of civilians in the chaos of war. "Beyond Duty" speaks well upon the tragic deaths of the families caught in the crossfire of battles.
