Overview

On March 25, 1969 Linda Hale Bucklin learned her vivacious mother was dead, her right temple blown out by a bullet from her father's pistol. Was it suicide or homicide?

Standing up to her father, heir to the Broadway/Hale Department Store fortune, Linda is disinherited, then ostracized from the family she loves. When her father marries his mistress, Denise Minnelli, stepmother to Liza Minnelli, the family unravels.

Once a child of privilege, Linda recounts, in vivid detail, her extraordinary life-summers on the family's 10,000 acre ranch in Northern California, hunting trips to Africa and Alaska, high society vignettes of a fourth-generation San Francisco family, and her father's final decision: to leave the entire family fortune to Minnelli.

But amid the ashes, Linda finds a new strength: the strength to forgive the one who started it all.

    Ok Read

This book was an ok read. I feel that there is more to the story then maybe the author even knows. I would really like to know if her mother did in fact commit suicide. If I remember correctly there were 2 others she mentioned in the book who also "committed suicide" with her fathers gun.

Not a great read, but an interesting story.

Having worked at The Broadway department store in Chula Vista, CA during the late '60s/early '70s. I was interested in reading this first-person account about one of the owners of the store, his daughter, and the somewhat mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of his wife. The Broadway/Hale brand targeted a middle- to upper-class customer base and this story, authored by the daughter, revealed a wealthy executive whose need for strict control extended beyond the stores and into his personal life. It was essentially a story of a man with an iron fist and feet of clay.

    Very interesting!

I found this book a quick read because I kept coming back to read a little more many times per day. It's amazing what family members will do to each other...

    What

What. I stop reading after 90 pages. By far the worse book I read. It was all over the place and who are these people?

A sad, but insightful study of one wealthy family's dynamics

The author is a fourth generation member of a wealthy family. She takes us through her childhood describing the luxuries and the interpersonal relationships. Of particular interest is how she adored her personable, faithful mother, and how she loved her devoted nanny who one day was gone. Also intriguing were her relationships with each of her two brothers and older sister. However, the book focuses on her strong controlling father who seemed to favor her until she went against him when she felt she had to protect her own interests. Then we see how the wealthy manipulate their children, employees, relatives, friends using their wealth and social standing. Both mother's and father's separate deaths leave questions to be answered. This was a relatively short book. It was easy to read. It must have ben cathartic for the author, and she has my sympathies. There were moments of heartbreak, frustration, mystery, and warmth. Her stepmother was quite vilified, yet to the whole of society she was a well-respected society matron. Very interesting.

    No go on this one.

This book was not organized very well. It jumped around quite a bit and was hard to follow in some areas. I usually really enjoy memoirs, but not this one.
