The OperaBabes are Karen England and Rebecca Knight, a British duo of classically trained singers who give a new twist to old favorites on Beyond Imagination. Once found "busking" outside London's Covent Garden opera house, the two have already soared to stardom in England and are set to charm the States with the American release of their album. Beginning with "One Fine Day," an edgy update of Puccini's "Un bel di" from Madama Butterfly that features a Japanese drum ensemble, the disc continues with a haunting version of Delibes's famous "Fower Duet" ("Lakmé H2O"), as well as fresh takes on other popular arias and familiar themes by Beethoven, Grieg, Dvorák, Mendelssohn, and ...

    A must for your collection

They have beautiful voices and perform nice updates to old classics. You cannot compare them to Mediaeval Babes, Enya or Deep Forest as they are all different types of music as I own several albums by each. These are simply updated opera classics that are definitely worth listening to and may make you want to explore the world of opera a little bit more.

    Found it!!!

Not into opera, but loved the version of Lakme "Flower Duet" heard on CSI-Miami and Ghirardelli chocolates. I found it on OperaBabes 'Beyond Imagination' after a year searching and buying other versions. After listening to the entire CD I fell in love with OperaBabes and would like to hear more of their music. Very beautiful music.

    Okay, but somewhat corny.

I must say that I enjoyed this album for the most part. They made an interesting mix of current trends with traditional literature. Alhough I also must say that most of the songs they chose for the album can be found on any other opera singer's album. I feel that many are afraid to venture farther into the music world...there are so many other beautiful peices in the world, but many keep using the same ones over and over and over again. At least on this album, they change a lot of the songs anyway....but still.... I tend to like when people try new songs altogether, whether they remake them, or just sing them as they are meant to be sung. It also bothered me that the singers didn't seem themselves with the way the dressed seemed in the CD. That is a real turn-off for me. They remind me of those forty-something year olds, trying to be twenty-something again. Even though the two singers are young, they just didn't seem themselves, and I honestly do not like that. But still, the singing and the unique twist on many of the songs was not bad at all!

Not the greatest of New Age

Althouh I have respect for this new form of music, let's just say marketing ploy to make quick money from old music. Also A bite off of the "Medieval Baebes" MB has a more pure new age sound. I agree to the comment below Stick to Enya. If you want to check out a talented singer check out Kristy Thirsk from Canada.

    Fresh, Solid & Intelligent

Mezzo Karen England and Soprano Rebecca Knight's debut, supported by perceptive and idiomatic accompaniment, is a solid and impressive recording. The instrumentalists play with great boldness and precision and present the classic works as vibrant music to be taken seriously, not just period pieces. These compositions pose a range of challenges to the singers. England and Knight respond to the arrangements' disarming freshness and originality with a ready and penetrating intelligence. While they muster ample virtuosic agility of lyric warmth as required, it is their dramatic sense that is most compelling. Knight flings herself passionately into the emotional torrents of "Chanson Boheme," while she delivers her own lyrics in the charming "Ode II Joy" from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with a confident fervor. England sings with pure, attractive tone; her voice has maturity, depth and flexibility, and her diction is impeccable. All of these songs are of interest in giving us another aspect of each composer's work. Many are achingly lovely -- Catalani's "Ebben?..." and the stirring Cohen/Lew arrangement of "Un bel di," are worth the price of this CD alone. This recital provides abundant evidence that opera (and its babes) has much to offer modern audiences. David R. Bannon, Ph.D.; author "Race Against Evil."

Stick with Enya and Deep Forest

Anything called Opera Babes would already turn off my ears. When I listened to this all I could hear was unexpressive singing slapped on a track with keyboards. The music doesn't melt together as say Enya's and/or Deep Forest where the vocals and music are one. This is a sad attempt at opera. Opera is feeling, Bocelli sings with feeling, that's why people flock to him. These girls who's voices don't seem to match their looks; I would question if it is their voices on the record, just don't deliver any feeling. C'mon, Opera Babes perform some opera, study your diction and know what you are singing, there is a reason this music has survived hundreds of years and I am not getting that from this record.

    Wonderfully refreshing!!

I am a classicly trained singer myself so, I can appreciate these ladies' voices and hard work. However,if you've never heard opera before, this is an excellent entre into the seldom heard arena for beginners. These ladies are easy on the eyes as well as the ears and sound more like a cross between Enigma, Deep Forest, and Enya if you've never heard any opera before. Get this album! I first saw them on the TV show, Inside Edition. They are fantastic! I gladly pay more for the album. This is a must buy.
