Pat Frank's Beyond Jack Squat comes for readers at the right time. As our own society is burdened with economic woes, the very real threat of world-wide warfare, and religious as well as social turmoil, we may very well be seeking the answer to the question of why we must face such adversity in our lives and on our planet. The reality of the human condition is excellently conveyed through Frank's new novel and might provide some solace to those of us who sit and ponder that very question. The American society has moved through phases of peace and discord, evolving with the changing nature of human-developed technologies and industries. Equally as important is the evolution of the individual in that hectic society, the person whose struggle to be one who stands out is very much a part of the lived experience of every human being in this American social construct. So we look for one to whom we can relate, and we will find this in Jackie O' Riley, whose journey carries him across a desperate and impoverished American landscape in a desperate search for a way to be more. War, poverty, the struggle for survival-these challenges to the peace of our lives are at the core of Jackie's trial in this heartwarming tale. Join Jackie as he ventures across the ever-changing American landscape and learn more about those qualities that keep us moving forward in spite of our challenges.
