Overview

It is the day after Aimee Patterson’s high school graduation. College beckons, as does her dream of becoming an engineer. On an early evening walk, her cocker spaniel charges into the woods on the other side of the pond. Aimee trails after him, and in the stillness of that forest the unthinkable happens. She becomes paralyzed and watches in horror as her hands vanish before her eyes.

Waking to the sound of voices, Aimee realizes that she has been kidnapped. Little does she know how far away from home she is, though. In an attempt to flee her captors, she launches from their confines only to freeze at the view outside the window. The sky is black and filled with stars, and in the distance is a familiar blue globe. The planet Earth.

A group of humans forced to flee their planet after an epidemic destroyed their civilization now travel the galaxies in search of an antidote. Retrieving samples of plant life from every solar system, on this occasion Aimee was accidentally seized instead.

Aimee must learn to avoid the advances of an awkward young scientist who seems intent on dissecting her, as her own fascination turns to the exotic young warrior, Zak. Having fallen in love with Zak, she is now torn with the decision to return to Earth or live beyond the stars.

This book was BRILLIANT! Completely and utterly amazing.

    ((No spoilers))
Beyond is basically about a girl who's abducted by human-like aliens. Aimee finds out that she has to wait five years until she can go home. Zak, one of the ship's inhabitants, interests her. How can she go home when she is too attracted to Zak?

First, the cover is PERFECT and the title matches the book really well. I really liked the characters, although I'm not a fan of how Aimee's a red head. Red hair is over used. Aimee's reactions were perfect to the situation! Some books either make the characters overly dramatic, or have no feelings at all. The writing style was different than I normally read. But it's a GOOD different.

I would recommend this book to SciFi lovers, and dystopian lovers. Although it wasn't dystopian, it had that kind of feel to it. I personally feel that this book is a book you can reread over and over. Yes, it was that good. Overall, I loved Beyond and cannot wait for the sequel!!!

Note: Thanks Maureen Miller for letting me review this book.

    More, Please

This is a great book. The characters are well-developed and each personality is striking. Whether
charming or frustrating they all have a role to play and they do it well.

The story is intriguing. It sort of reminded me of that 80s movie The Last Starfighter. Your average
human suddenly swept into a distant world, being forced to adjust. Fantastic.

The plot is good too. There were a few times when I thought, “Oh no, I knew this would happen” only
to discover that Miller tricked me. Surprise is always appreciated while reading a book.

There are subtleties of importance, like what their clothing is made of and the way time and space
is explained. Miller doesn’t overdo the descriptions, but you get the feeling that you are there and
see what the characters see. Wonderful.

Beyond isn’t just a book you read, it’s an experience, a very satisfying one at that. Only one thing
bothered me: the ending was delivered with a bow that fit too precisely. I’m hoping there will be a
sequel, because I love these characters and want more of this world.

    Exciting, romantic, thoughtful.

The fact that a story about a teenage girl, alien abduction, love and adventure in space seems so real and believable is a credit to the author,'s gifted writing. I enjoyed this book more than I have any other this year. I almost hated to pick it up and read more since it meant it would be finished sooner. The character of Aimee is a delightful, real young woman, curious and intelligent and attractive. Planning to study engineering in college, she is resourceful and unafraid, and drawn to the tall dedicated warrior Zak. Her growth in the story is a pleaure to watch, as is the opening of Zak's emotional self. The other characters are full and interesting (especially the electronic one!) and life aboard the Horus is full of fascinating surprises (and some dangers) and soon becomes as familiar as home to Aimee. A feared plague, attacks in space by enemy ships, and a crash landing on an alien world bring Aimee and Zak closer and more trusting of each other. I look forward to more adventures of Aimee and Zac.

    Soft and smart

In Beyond we meet Amiee Patterson as she is kidnapped from her own back yard by a source more powerful than anything she's ever known. When she awakens in this masterfully engineered civilization your imagination will go wild. Ms. Miller takes Amiee on an adventure through the unknown with Zak, a handsome warrior who has a past worth fighting for. Together they face disease, the greed of others and heartache, but most of all the desire to make a "home" together. Where ever that is. The writing is fast paced and fresh, and without a hint of error as has become prominent in other self-published titles. If you are familiar with Ms. Miller's work you will find she has gathered a similar cast of personable characters; a heroine who isn't afraid to push the boundaries, a hero who is just as charming as he is strong, and a mix of potential good and evil in others. This is a sci-fi romance that even non-sci-fi romance fans can get into. It is also meant for the mature young adult, but can go so much further beyond. She doesn't fill it with eye rolling teenage angst or the cliché triangle of love. It's written soft and smart, for the intelligent fan of the genres. Ms. Miller is off to a great start in what will be an exciting series. She won't leave you hanging at the end, only hungry for more!
