Overview

No one believes in ghosts anymore. And especially not Helen, a sensible widow who lives for her two teenaged kids and who runs the best pre-school in town. But when little Katie Byrne enters her school, strange things begin to happen.

Katie's widowed father, Nat, begins to awaken feelings in Helen that she had counted as dead. But why does Helen have such odd dreams of Lynda Byrne, Nat's dead wife? And why does she keep catching the scent of Linda's perfume? Why does Helen get the feeling that Linda is reaching beyond the grave to tell her something?

As Helen and Nat each explore the pain of loss and the joy of newfound love, Linda Byrne's ghost plays a bold hand, beseeching Helen to uncover the mystery of her death. But what Helen finds could make her the target of a jealous killer and a modern witch-hunt that threatens her and her family... and the magical second-time-around love that's taking her and Nat by storm.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Widow Helen Evett already has a plateful of problemsshe has her Salem, Mass., preschool to run, two rebellious teenagers and a dotty aunt to look afterso she certainly doesn't need a ghost in her life. The ghostas far as Helen can surmiseis Linda, the recently deceased wife of Nat Brynes and mother of adorable three-year-old Katie. After Linda's apparition gets Helen's attention, with the help of vicious headaches, noises in the night and the overpowering scent of perfume, it sends two cryptic messages: Find out why Linda died; keep Katie safe. But safe from what, or who? Certainly not Nat, Katie's devoted, loving father, with whom Helen is falling in love. Full of charm and wit, Stockenberg's latest paranormal romance (following Time After Time) is truly enthralling.(Aug.)
Library Journal
Practical, widowed Helen Evett is concerned about two thingsraising her two teenage children and running her highly sought-after preschool. She is the last person who would ever have put much stock in the supernatural. A pair of well-matched protagonists, a precocious three-year-old, a relentless ghost, and a conniving nanny combine to produce an engrossing, well-written story that should keep readers captivated to the end. Stockenberg, a popular writer of paranormals (Time After Time, Dell, 1995), won a Rita for Emily's Ghost (Dell, 1992). She lives in Newport, Rhode Island.

Just finished this on my Nook and ran into no formatting problems reading this book. Great story, terrific characters, and a cunning villain that made you realize how easy it would be to bring down a preschool. Humorous, chilling, and romantic. Loved it!

I loved this book although I was bit taken aback at the beginning. Helen was dreading March because her husband passed away on April1. I was dreading March because my husband passed away on April 1. He was in law enforcement so was mine, his name was Hand my husband's name is Hank. She's a teacher of young children as am I and she drives a Volvo-as do I. Once I got over my tears and read the book it was great!

I started reading Annette's books this summer and haven't stopped. All of her books are perfect summer reads! They're just mysterious enough to make me want to read "just 1 more chapter"!! All of her main characters are people I wish I knew. Waiting for "Tidewater". Sharon

Antoinette Stockenberg's books almost always fill the bill for me, and this was not an exception, when I'm looking for some light, fun reading.

Totally enjoyed this book. Technical problem toward end. Skipped about ten pages to end, had to manually enter page numbers at Go To Page to read last pages of book. Otherwise would definitely recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The plot was great. Some parts were really funny, a few parts were steamy, and if you believe in ghosts and spirits, this book is for you.

Appropriate for those who love New England and enjoy family stories, woven with mystery. I do like reading Stockenberg books; about 5 at this point. Some of the author’s books qualify for book club discussions. The length and fantasy of beyond midnight may not work for a discussion club.

Although I had figured out who was the trouble maker mid book I still wasn't sure how they were going to capture them. Kept my interest through the entire book. Just discovered this author this summer and have read all her books that are available for the Nook. Waiting for more!

I really enjoyed this book. In a lot of fiction, I tend to skip over the descriptives that seem unnecessary to the story line. (I did this a lot in the Grey series.) The writing style of Antoinette Stockenberg made me want to read every word. It made me want to get a complete picture in my head of each scene and person.

Once again Antoinette Stockenberg has not let me down.  Her books pull you in and will keep you up past bedtime just to find out what happens next.  I enjoyed this one as much as I have enjoyed others by this author.  The heroine is an average single mom, torn between work and responsibilities at home.  Throw in a little mystery and a lot of drama, now you have pure entertainment.

Great book!  It made me laugh and cry.  This book was better than Emily's Ghost - which I thought was terrific.  Definitely a wonderful, fast read.  A real page-turner at the end.  Highly recommend.  Buy it!
