This book is both funny and useful, though I have to warn that the reader must beware of some of the advice. Pavel Tsatsouline trained Soviet Special Forces to lose the Cold War, but he has some great ideas on fitness, strength and flexibility. First of all, if you are a person who believes in capital punishment for those who burn the American flag, you probably should avoid the book. There are many slams at most things American in the sports and fitness industry. True, most readers will find them funny, even if they do start to lose their appeal after a few pages. But for those who are not inclined to take joke's about the qualification of our experts, this book is best avoided. An odd point is that flexibility is not considered a foundation block of fitness in this book, which is strange for a book on flexibility. The book recommends that you only train to be slightly more flexible than your sport, job or lifestyle requires. When certain athletes are held up to ridicule for not being able to touch their toes, the book basically says, 'so what?' Their sport doesn't require toe touching. Sometimes the advice is contradictory. For example, in one chapter, we are told not to warm up for strength events, to warm up with low reps for strength events, and, finally, that weight lifters get hurt because they didn't warm up with high reps. I walked away shaking my head at that advice. The exercises are terrific and have helped me become more flexible. However, the pictures and descriptions do not always answer all of my questions about the movement. All said, this is an instructive, funny book that most athletes and rehabilitating patients could use to great advantage. But be careful to spot the few inconsistencies and be doubly careful to bring your sense of humor to the reading room with you.
