    An absolute masterpiece!

This is the classic album by The Pete Best Combo originally released in 1964 under the title “Best of the Beatles.” Pete Best was the original drummer for the Beatles. THE single biggest mistake the Beatles ever made was to sack Pete Best. His drumming is impeccable and this outstanding disc proves it. Songs like “Everybody”, “Pete’s Theme”, “Castin’ My Spell ” and “I’ll Try Anyway” show just how good a drummer Pete was. In some ways, I actually consider this to be a Beatles album. In the early days of Beatlemania Pete Best WAS the Beatles. He was by far the most popular member and a huge reason they got noticed by Brian Epstein. If it wasn’t for Pete they may not have gotten signed to EMI. It truly is sad that the Beatles were not signed to Decca records instead. If they had, Pete would have probably stayed with the group and Mike Smith would have done a better job as their producer. Imagine what Pete’s enormous talent could have contributed to “Sgt.Pepper’s”, “Revolver” and “Abbey Road”. The Beatles would have been a hundred times more popular had he stayed!!! It should also be noted what gifted songwriters Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington were. This album is every bit the equal of the Beatles debut release “Please Please Me.” In many ways it actually surpasses some of that album! If the Pete Beat Combo had received the proper promotion, they would have had a number of huge hit singles. It’s a shame that they have not gotten the proper recognition they deserve. I highly recommend this CD for any fan of early British rock and the Beatles.
