Overview

Bestselling author Jude Watson whisks Amy and Dan to the tombs of Egypt in the thrill-packed 4th installment of the 39 Clues.

A Clue found in Japan has Amy and Dan jetting off to Egypt to find out just what's behind the fierce rivalry between the Tomas and Ekaterina branches of the Cahill family. Was a Clue stolen from the Tomas branch? Where is it now? And most important, can Amy and Dan get their hands on it before their rivals do?

It's a wild race that will take Amy and Dan deep down into the tombs of Egypt . . . and right into the hands of the enemy.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
The fourth book in The 39 Clues series finds Dan and Amy Cahill in Cairo. This time the pair befriends a young Egyptian expert and an elderly friend of their deceased grandmother— both new acquaintances provide history and guidance in search of the clues that lead to a source of power. The search for a missing statue with hints to the latest clue lead Dan and Amy on a hunt through the city as they encounter ancient maps, hidden rooms, historical statues, and dusty tombs. Irina Spasky, a former KGB operative and a relative to Dan and Amy, is the pair's family rival in this book. With help from their resourceful au pair and hidden messages from their grandmother, the two close in on the current clue as recent friends and family members continue to sabotage and double cross them along the way. The over the top action and improbable escapes that fans have come to expect continue in Watson's contribution. Series followers may be more entertained by this book than the third as Watson adds more characterization, making the two main characters a bit more dynamic and adding a little more depth to the brother and sister. Yet the adventure and escapes in the previous books are in full display here. A crocodile chase, a submarine ride and wreck, trapped in tombs, hidden clues, scheming bad guys, and ancient history each play a part. Most series readers will be entertained, but some may begin to lose any suspense that the two are in any real danger as they always seem to know exactly the right thing to do and always seem to escape at just the right moment. Never the less the books will continue to engage many middle grade readers. Reviewer: Jeff Mann

Gr 3–6—In this leg of the worldwide scavenger hunt, Amy and Dan Cahill, accompanied by their au pair Nellie, are off to Egypt to find the next clue left by Ekaterina branch founder Katherine Cahill. Once there, they learn about the rivalry between the Tomas and Ekaterina branches of the Cahill family, discover a secret Ekaterina stronghold at an Egyptian hotel, and explore tombs of ancient Egyptians. They meet their grandmother Grace's friend Hilary, who gives them several items from Grace. While Hilary and her grandson Theo seem eager to help, looks can be deceiving. Run-ins with Irina Spasky, Jonah Wizard, and Alistair Oh add to the excitement and drama of the adventure. Amy and Dan discover Cahill connections to Napoleon, Thomas Edison, and Marie Curie along with paintings and hieroglyphs that will lead them on their dangerous hunt that's fraught with betrayals and reversals. Like the previous books, historical information is woven into the fast-paced adventure.—Sarah Polace, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH

Gr 4–7—The fourth book (Scholastic, 2009) in the series, written by Jude Watson, finds siblings Amy and Dan Cahill in Cairo searching for clues among ancient tombs, in museums, and on sunken islands that will lead to the Cahill family secret. Along the way, many relatives spy, chase, or imprison them as they decode the mysteries. Who can they trust? Maybe no one. David Pittu does a fabulous job of giving the many characters different voices, and using sinister or snooty tones as necessary. For fans of the series.—Debbie Whitbeck, West Ottawa Public Schools, Holland, MI

    WONDERFUL!

This book was simply wonderful! I have read and enjoyed the previous books in this series, and I was curious to see how a woman author would do, seeing as how all the other books in the series are written by men. Jude Watson did a wonderful job with this book and it was a good read!

Great series to promote interest in reading to tweens/teens!

My son, who has not been very interested in reading, is now reading for pleasure! He really got into these books and has read every one in the series. We rush to B & N everytime there is a new release in the series. These books can also be used for A/R testing purposes. Its nice to find a series of books that kids like that can also be educational and creative! I recommend these to parents looking to spark an interest in reading!

    Very good book

I've been a 39 Clues fan since the first came out so if you have read them you would agree that they are very good books. (as of my description)I like this one the best because of the silly humor and the story that takes place in Cairo. Most of all I liked (with the other 3) the history mixed with fiction. I like the plot with 2 kids, a cat and their au pair on a quest for the 39 clues which leads to a great power. In this one they're in Egypt looking in tombs for their 4th clue and having to compete with Irina Spasky, one of their several devious cousins. I Can't wait for the 5th. I highly recommend this book to everybody.

    39 Clues Rocks

I listen to this series on AudioBook. The narrator is wonderful and has a great command of different voices. I love learning about other places and history. I have looked up all kinds of things on the internet that are referenced in the books. It is fun to learn cool stuff without studying.

The 39 Clues: boook 4 Beyond the Grave

This book was a very exciting and thrilling book. Although it is the fourth book in this series and i wouldn't say it was the best one. It was sometimes hard to follow what the writer was trying to say. Dan and Amy Cahill are the main characters in this book and their story starts in Egypt to find the fourth clue of the 39 clues, that the cahills left behind for the family to find. Their family though was the most powerful family on the face of the earth. They had members from George Washington to Benjamin Franklin even Napoleon Bonaparte. So niw they have to collect all these elements to create a philospers stone which is stated to be the most powerful thing ever. So Dan and Amy are looking for clues left from Katherine Cahill in Egypt trying to find out what she left behind. This book was a very good book so i recommend you check it out.

    Great Series

Love, love, love these books! They are great for kids because they incorporate history of different regions and important people from history in each book. Kind of like an "Amazing Race" with kids as main characters.
Only down side is having to wait for each one to come out!
