Overview

"To all of our years together," Lisa Montgomery's husband said one evening, raising his glass in a toast, "some of them good." They laughed and clicked wine glasses. But after his death, Lisa discovers he hadn't been teasing. When the contents of a secret post office box reveals his illicit affair, she struggles to come to terms with his betrayal. Forced to examine her life as a wife, mother, and as a woman, she realizes her troubled childhood didn't allow her to be anything but composed and quiet, and she'd never learned to show love.

A chance meeting with a retired fire chief leads to changes she'd never imagined, and she falls in love for the first time. She learns to open her heart, to let go of the sterile woman she'd become and passionately embrace the woman she wishes to be. Only her relationship with her estranged daughter dulls her new happiness, so Lisa prepares to make one more effort to talk to her, to offer the love she'd always felt but never knew how to express. But a jealous coworker watches, wanting to destroy what he can't have.

Beyond the Quiet shares the story of one woman's struggles though bitterness, loss, and betrayal, learning to cherish each moment and follow her long-buried dreams. It's the story of how a quiet, passionless widow becomes spirited enough to climb onto her lover's shoulders for a piggyback ride in the nude.

    Good read

I really liked this book. Maybe because the lead characters were closer to my age and it showed romance after 40 isn't a myth. At times I wanted to strangle the daughter and get mom to scream at her that her father was not a super hero he had faults that hurt. Loved Terry's strength but have to admit at his introduction I was thinking stalker with a capital S.

Read this book you won't be disappointed.

Past and present mistakes, future hope

When Lisa's husband dies after a long illness it's bound to take time before Lisa returns to her old self. But in Brenda Hill's Beyond the Quiet, Lisa's old self might not be someone she wants to return to. Her loving marriage and wisely prudent husband turn out not to have been quite as she imagined. Soon Lisa's under threat of losing home and friends. Even her memories seem false. Meanwhile two strangers seem to stalk her while her daughter threatens to cut off any chance at love.

Lisa has always relied on others to define her view of herself. Unmoored by disaster, she has to choose her new friends carefully. Will she learn to take risks? Will she learn to take care? Or will she learn both?

Brenda Hill's novel, Beyond the Quiet, explores what hidden strengths a quiet woman might have, in the bedroom and in the office, eventually revealing the greater strength required to make oneself vulnerable and survive. Lisa may not be my favorite character, and some of her decisions seem simply foolish. But her story certainly kept me reading, and many women may have had to learn her lessons in their time. A tough page-turner with a good ending, I really enjoyed the read.
