Overview

In a universe torn apart by civil war, a warrior and a slave must fight for their lives and a love that may destroy them both.

After five years behind enemy lines, Captain Cyani has to complete one final mission before she can return to Azra-a planet ruled by a sisterhood of celibate warriors. Along the way she finds a prisoner, chained and beaten-but radiating feral power and an unbroken spirit.

For years Soren has endured torture as his captors leeched his very essence, a unique hormone then sold as a sexual narcotic in the shadow trade. Now he has been freed from slavery by a beautiful warrior woman with radiant blue eyes.

After years in bondage, Soren's hormones are so unbalanced that he will die if he does not mate with a woman. Can Cyani be the woman he needs to survive, or will this forbidden bond destroy them?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Cultures collide in Granger's debut, an uneven space opera romance. Azralen soldier Cyani's final mission is derailed when she rescues Soren, a Byralen slave whose potent sex hormones have been used by the evil Garulen to create narcotics. Abandoned behind enemy lines, the pair must get Soren home to find the mate he needs to survive. Cyani's plan to help her family and achieve political power through military service is undermined first by her budding romance with Soren and then by her brother's machinations, which completely derail the plot in a rather bewildering fashion. Supposedly empowered Cyani never seems in control of her life, and nurturing hero Soren ends up rather bland, but the intriguing setting and some strong scenes of culture clash may draw readers back for a sequel. Kudos to author Granger for crafting such a well-conceived universe. The characters are well-rounded and sympathetic; the cultures are all unique; and the technology is believable. Plus, Vicca the fox is cool; I want a scout like her. My only complaints are 1) random typos which should have been caught by the editor; and 2) chunks of Soren's background are not revealed until the last few chapters; a prologue showing his capture by the Garulen would have been useful. I predict future volumes for Cyn and Yara, and I eagerly look forward to them.

On planet Azra, Captain Cyani looks forward to finally returning home after working behind enemy lines for five years. She is anxious to return to see her brother and to rejoin the sisterhood of celibate warriors. Still there is one mission left to accomplish before she can leave the battlefields of the civil war ravaging the planet. However, her last assignment is interrupted when she rescues a battered chained prisoner Soren. He is ailing physically from the beatings and the leeches used to suck out his unique hormone sold as a sexual narcotic on the black market. He has been drained of the hormone that gives him life. Cyani saves his life again but he is now bonded to her. If she leaves he dies. He hides his link so she can choose to stay or go even as others want the hormone he is producing thanks to his soulmate. This is an exciting outer space romance with a twilight Zone like twist. The creative story line is fast-paced once the key players are fully understood as to their basic needs and their desires. The lead couple is a delightful pairing as the audience will relish Cyn's "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done" (A Tale of two Cities) values as he is willing to die to let his beloved choose between staying and going. Jess Granger provides an engaging romantic science fiction thriller. Harriet Klausner

Best character was the brother. Everyone else was boring and one dimensional. Readable but not good.

This was an excellent read and I was very surprised that this was her first novel. I read this book in two days, I couldn't it down! I can't wait to read the next in the series.

It's not very often that a sci-fi based book really catches my attention, but this one did that and more! The characters were amazing, the plot both thrilling and endearing. I couldn't put it down til the last page. This is definitely a new favorite author!
