Beyond the Sunset: The Romantic Collection [Bonus CD]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Dave Thompson
The subtitle says it all. Beyond the Sunset gathers up a dozen of the loveliest love songs from the first four Blackmore's Night albums, plus two previously unreleased cuts, "Once in a Million Years" and an alternate version of the favorite "Ghost of a Rose." That means there's no room for some of the rockier or more rambunctious songs in the band's catalog -- they, no doubt, must wait for The Party Album. But "Be Mine Tonight," "Wish You Were Here," and the title track are all solid classics, while their version of Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust" is sufficiently impassioned to make you forget it has ever been sung before; famously, Baez composed the song around her ...

Here, you hear them anew and without any of their intended baggage, and it's a truly uplifting experience. In terms of mood, Beyond the Sunset might suffer from a surfeit of singularity, especially if you are accustomed to the full range of Blackmore's Night's emotional punch. But it's a superb introduction and, sometimes, a single mood is all you require.

    A Sweet Serenade

This was the first CD that brought me into the world of Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night. This collection of romantic songs causes the listener to wonder about love and its consequences. Joy, pain, poetry, and loss are feelings that this CD forces the listener to ponder and consider. The song "Wish You Were Here" shows lament and emotion that only Candice Night could express. Candice Night also shares her feelings of love and gratitude in the song "All Because Of You". Ritchie Blackmore shows the world his longing for a time past where romance and memories motivated the human soul, from a world of spirituality and innocence with the song, "I Still Remember" he does just that. Ritchie Blackmore gives us the instrumental "Beyond The Sunset" where his spirit seeks solitude, thus offering the listener a safe place to seek inner truth. The CD of Christmas Songs are an additional surprise for the buyer, and the DVD collection as a whole is certainly worth every penny. This CD brought me peace of mind, and I would recommend this collection to anyone who loves to love.
