Overview

Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor's Story is a memoir by Lynn C. Tolson. The story begins with her suicide attempt at the age of twenty-five. In the aftermath, she commits to counseling to recover from anxiety and depression. The reader accompanies the author through therapy sessions, where the young woman reveals dysfunctional family relationships, including domestic violence, sexual abuse, and mental illness. She learns from her counselor that she'd been suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) which had an underlying link to her self-destructive behaviors, such as addictions and alcoholism. Due to the therapeutic process, the author discovers the value of life. Her story illustrates physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation. In sharing her inspirational journey, she provides readers with a message of hope.

Lynn C. Tolson used the craft of creative non-fiction to write Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor's Story. The story is non-fiction, yet the style reads like a novel. By incorporating prose and poetry, Tolson is able to hold the reader's attention during a harrowing story. Through first-person narrative, the reader sees the flashbacks, nightmares, daydreams, and memories that define the author's childhood. Privy to Tolson's intense therapy sessions, the reader discovers the ways in which the author changed her life.

Author Lynn C. Tolson appeals to the reader from the first paragraph of her powerful memoir Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor's Story. Tolson engages the reader with metaphor, prose, and poetry. Tolson tells her riveting story in first-person narrative, enabling the reader to instantly bond with her authentic voice. Readers can readily visualize the settings, plot, and characters due to the author's well-developed descriptions and dialogue. This is not an average auto-biography: the book combines story-telling with self-help, affirmations, meditations, and therapeutic concepts. Each chapter begins with a quote appropriate to the content, which gives the reader even more to contemplate. The topics challenge the reader to explore social problems within the context of family relationships. However, Tolson uses her clever wit to offer the reader occasional comic relief. Readers say that they simultaneously laughed and cried on the same page. Some readers say that reading the book literally changed their lives. Readers also say they view themselves and their families with a fresh perspective.

Editorial Reviews

Georgia Richardson
I'm going to start out this review by saying I was brought face-to-face with abuse. [from the story]. I was shocked, humbled, torn, angry, sad, but most of all, enlightened. If you ask me, everyone should read Beyond the Tears and therefore, be armed. The writing is excellent, you will fall in love with Karen, (I won't tell who she is), and you will want to reach out and protect Lynn. You will feel helpless, however, you will feel somewhat vindicated in the end. How does a victim, such as Ms. Ly

Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor’s Story is amazing! It's a story of incredible courage, strength, and will to not only survive but to thrive and help others. I'm inspired by Lynn Tolson’s desire to help other women by publishing her own story of trial and suffering. Any woman who has ever suffered childhood abuse or domestic violence will relate to this touching narrative of Lynn's life. Lynn's story gives hope to all women who have ever suffered any form of abuse.

[Beyond the Tears] is the story of triumph over a series of adversities, and learning to love life after wanting to die. Lynn Tolson has captured a time period and given us a glimpse of that era from her unique viewpoint. This behind-the-scenes perspective takes us through Sixties and Seventies American culture, while conveying the author's hardships and turmoil with wit and deep insights. Her narrative resounds with humorous and poetic depictions as she undergoes family strife, endures child ab

I was transported into the mind of a young woman bent on suicide and traveled with her through her suicide attempt, discovery, revival in a cold hospital room and transfer to a psyche ward. This was just in the first chapter. The remainder of my night was shot as I stayed awake, reading each page as quickly as possible so that I might know this woman was okay. That she recovered. That she escaped her abuser and survived. Intense doesn't begin to describe Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor's Story

Lynn has triumphed over incest, the patriarchal attitudes that permeated her familial legacy, an unhappy marriage to an abusive man, depression, anxiety, mental illness, suicide attempts, and drug addiction. She reclaimed her light. She won her victory. Her book has a certain realism that pierces straight through to the heart and soul of the matter. She is able to midwife redemption, healing, and empowerment for herself. By sharing this book with us, she creates the requisite awareness that germ

    Thank you, Lynne

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever been a victim of childhood sexual abuse, or suffers from the disease of addiction, as well as other mental health issues. As I read Lynne C. Tolson's account of her life, beginning with the first page, I felt as though I was reading about my own life. It gave me a feeling of déjà vu. Only if you have experienced any type of sexual abuse, addiction, attempted suicide, emotional abuse, mental health issues and just the fear of living with the memories inside of you, can you appreciate the courage it took for the author to put herself out there for the entire world to read. On a personal level, this book has recently helped me move on in my own therapeutic journey in dealing with that area of my life where I know I need to in order to experience true freedom.

    So Well Written: So Honest

Lynn tells her story and she does so in such an honest way. What she shares can only be felt as real. She employs a technique she calls her therapist. Its a way of learning from Lynn what she was able to learn from the many therapists she received help from throughout her life. I think one of the worst things to happen to someone is to share one's story just to have that therapist relocate or retire, what have you. What Lynn was able to do was to persevere and still reach out for the help she needed and because of her survival, we learn from her in a very deep and meaninful way.

The book, the story, is well written. For me, it was hard to put down because I was able to relate to the author. It was like every page I turned I was hoping that life turned out differently for her. What I learned is life is just life and we all must live and learn our own way. I was thankful to see what Lynn learned through her life and it helped me learn some things about my own. The key thing I found in this book was how absolutely honest it read for me. So many biographies are written with a pleasing filter for the person of interest in the book. This book has no filter, its just raw honesty played out on the stage of life where there are no redos.

I was honored and deeply moved to read her story and I feel you will be too. I highly recommend "Beyond the Tears."
