A book of treachery, peril, slackening resolve and thwarted love . . . and a little Southern Rebellion.

Romance has faded, and shame has weakened resolve. Mystery has shrouded the truth, and pride has matured into a world enveloped by rage and war. And the only constant is betrayal--and at times he is your sole companion. Yet, hope lingers . . .

Hank, a soldier for the Union, refuses retreat from his first bloodied action without proof he has been there, and he takes it from a dying enemy. Fed by the compassion he finds in the Confederate's last letter and his own unsettled dreams and troubling memories, Hank imagines a romance that drives him relentlessly toward an impossible rendezvous. All the while, Elizabeth, the widow, struggles with burdens left by her husband, even as neighbors conspire against her. And what is she to make of this Union soldier, this enemy, so set on coming to her?

Editorial Reviews

Staff Reviewer
"War often makes strange bedfellows of us all. 'Beyond the Wood' is a novel of the American Civil War, as Hank, a Union soldier, takes a fallen Confederate Soldier's last letter and seeks to deliver it to his widow. Aggressive, Hank puts the new widow in an unusual predicament. Their situation grows unique, as Michael J. Roueche presents a tale of personal intrigue and a unique brand of romance, recommended. 'Beyond the Wood' is a fine addition to historical fiction collections."

"... A story of love and redemption. ...[Depicts] attitudes and feelings of soldiers on both sides as well as struggles of civilians living along the border. ...Captures the Civil War in a well-told exciting adventure and romance."
Joseph A. Derie
"Although events involving the 19th Indiana Infantry as a regiment appear historically accurate, some of the plot points involve dramatic license by the author. ...'Beyond the Wood' is an interesting and different Civil War novel."

Meet the Author

Michael J. Roueche grew up in Virginia and spent most of his adult life in the Old Dominion. Always a romantic, only in more recent years did he discover the Civil War that always had surrounded him, thanks to Bruce Catton books from his father's library and a good friend who gave him a copy of Michael Schaara's Killer Angels. He and his wife of 35 years now live in Colorado, where they enjoy hiking and exploring the High Plains and Rocky Mountains, with their alpine vistas, aspen groves and evergreen forests, and amazing wildlife. They have five children and several grandchildren.

Beyond the Wood, Book 1, by Michael J. Roueche, is a marvelous story of sights, sounds, and human emotions set in the Civil War. The author brings to life the lives and loves of characters caught in the tug-of-war conflicts between North and South. Reid Gragg visits a battlefield in Virginia(present day)at the request of his father to carry on a family tradition. Not wanting to disappoint his father, he has to take with him a button from a Civil War uniform passed down in the family. This button is a key to what Reid will experience as he meets a lady in the field. He has an ancestor named Henry Gragg. This stranger speaks of Henry Gragg as if she know him. " Hank "was a southerner from Virginia who fought for the North. The story begins to unravel, full of horrific war and heart-wrenching romance, with a measure of tragedy and betrayal. Be prepared for an excellent story. Civil War fans will love this book. I look forward to Book 2 in the series. I received this free book in exchange for my honest review.
