Overview

For Many Writers, the act of getting words down on paper is the most important part of the creative process. But the heat of creation offers only fleeting excitement. In Beyond the Words, Bonni Goldberg, author of the beloved bestseller Room to Write, illuminates the writer's path to more lasting and reliable fulfillment. As Goldberg has learned through years of teaching in workshops and classrooms, writers who are most passionate and grounded about their work tend to concentrate not merely on the genesis of a first draft but also on three often ignored aspects of writing: nurturing ideas, revising to best communicate those ideas, and completing the cycle of writing by going public. In this exquisite guide, Goldberg invites you to explore these overlooked creative stages, which are essential to leading a satisfied life as a writer. Shifting your focus away from generating words, she champions instead the more nourishing goal of leading "the whole writer's life." She describes alternative sources of motivation to help you realize and maintain balance, flow, and health in your work. Rich with encouragement, tools, examples, and exercises, Beyond the Words is sure to add depth and delight to your writing.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Goldberg (Room To Write: Daily Invitation to a Writer's Life) takes a holistic approach to writing. More than just an income-generating venture, the writing process, according to Goldberg, should be an enjoyable fulfillment of the creative spirit; the act of creation not the accolades and monetary remuneration that might follow successful publication is what should satisfy the writer. According to Goldberg, three elements are essential to creativity: "percolation," the mostly internal process that precedes any written draft; "revision," a different process from rewriting; and "going public," which involves a broader sense of publishing to include establishing relationships with other writers, as well as with readers. Goldberg has taught creative writing at Johns Hopkins and the University of Baltimore and currently leads writing workshops across the country. Her nurturing and artistic focus differs from the writing-as-a-business philosophy exemplified by Marc McCutcheon's Damn, Why Didn't I Write That? and will find appeal in workshop and support-group settings.
